Karkomi, Zev 85, of Chicago, passed away Thursday evening with his loving family by his side. Zev was born in the Ukraine and escaped the horrors of WWII to Eretz Yisrael in 1941. Zev was a proud participant in Israel's fight for independence as a member of the Hagana and later served as a Capt. in the IDF until 1958. Zev immigrated to Chicago in 1960 with very little means, a wife, two children, and an inability to speak the language of the land. Through sheer hard work, determination and perserverence Zev rose to prominence in Chicago as a highly respected businessman and philanthropist. He was the founder of AVIV Asset Management, one of the country's largest privately held owners of nursing home facilities, and was also an immensely succussfull owner and developer of general real estate. A self proclaimed, "Deal Junkie" he became known around the country as an extremly creative and honorable businessman who used his word as his bond and would never go back on a shake hand agreement. Zev never forgot his roots and was a substantial supporter of the Friends of the IDF, AIPAC, YisraeLink, and the Illinois Holocaust Musuem amongst many others. Zev was a devoted son to the late Shlomo and Rose Zafran, and a dear brother to the late Shmuel, Chaim, and Moshe Zafran. Zev's legacy is carried on by his beloved wife of 62 years Shifra (nee Melamed), his loving daughters Vicki Karkomi and Suzie Karkomi (Judge Marvin Leavitt), his cherished grandson Ari Ryan and his devoted cousin Zeev (Ela) Bendavid. Service Monday, 11:00 a.m. at Anshe Emet Synagogue, 3751 N. Broadway, Chicago. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Friends of The Israel Defense Forces, 29 E. Madison St., Suite 802, Chicago, IL 60602 or to AIPAC, P.O. Box A3996, Chicago, IL 60690. For info The Weinstein Funeral Home, 847-256-5700

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around you and whispered "come to me." With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
We will miss you~
