Yvonne Cheney Obituary

South Berwick, ME; Yvonne L. (Lavigne) Cheney, 87, passed away October 3, 2005 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover after a long illness.

She was born in Salmon Falls, N.H. on November 20, 1917 the daughter of Joseph A. and Delina (Theberge) Lavigne. She graduated from St. Michael’s School in 1930, Berwick Academy, at the age of 16, class of 1934 and McIntosh Business College.

She was employed as a secretary to Paul Harrison Consulting Engineer of Dover, NH. In 1939, she began her employment in the Public Works Department of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, as head of Office Services Branch, as a saving bond salesperson, during World War II. She retired after 20 years of service.

In 1945, she married Raymond G. Cheney of South Berwick and was blessed by 2 sons Bruce and Ronald. She was a loving wife and mother. She was a member of Cocheco Country Club for over 57 years and the Cocheco Bowling league for 50 years. She enjoyed golf, bowling and bridge

She also belonged to the ladies of the Moose, senior friends of Portsmouth, senior citizens of Dover and South Berwick. She and her husband enjoyed ballroom, square, round and Greek dancing. They were married over 60 years; they traveled extensively and spent 26 winters in Florida.

She is survived by her husband Raymond, her son, Bruce H. and his wife Pamela of Lebanon, ME; a granddaughter Shannon and her husband Lawrence Brown and 3 great granddaughters of North Carolina; her son Ronald R. and his wife Deborah of Wells, ME, a grandson Daniel and his wife, Rebecca of Haverhill, MA.

A brother Leo A. Lavigne and 2 sisters, Beatrice Canon and Irene Jutras predeceased her.

Relatives and friends are invited to call Wednesday October 5th from 7 to 9 p.m. at the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., So. Berwick.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday October 6th, at 10AM in St. Michael’s Church, Young St. with Rev. John Skehan, pastor as celebrant. Burial will be in the family lot in New Town Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in her name to the South Berwick Emergency Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 157 So. Berwick, ME 03908
