Yerasmus Zervopoulos Obituary

Zervopoulos, Dr. Yerasmus 89, of Skokie, IL went home to be with the Lord on January 26, 2010. He is survived by Evangelia, his wife of 59 years and a retired pediatrician, and children John, Martha Zervopoulos Siomos (and Demetrios Siomos), Irene, and Peter, he is also survived by his grandchildren, Vassilis Siomos and Effie Siomos McDougal (and David McDougal), and great-grandchildren, Persephone McDougal and Ares McDougal, Yerasmus is also survived by his brothers, Andreas of Athens, Greece and Dimitrios of Kerkyra, Greece, and by nieces and nephews in Greece and America. Yerasmus was born and raised in Greece. As a young man, he sat under the teaching of his uncle and mentor, Dr. Kostas Metallinos, a founder of the Greek Free Evangelical Church in Greece. In 1949, Yerasmus came to the United States to attend graduate school; he received his Ph.D. in 1955 in Biblical Literature from Boston University. In 1950, Yerasmus married Evangelia, a then recent medical school graduate whom he had met in Greece and who had accepted an appointment as a medical resident in pediatrics and cardiology at Boston City Hospital. In 1956, Yerasmus and Evangelia and their family moved to the Chicago area. From then until his death, Yerasmus, in partnership with Evangelia, dedicated himself to the Lord's work among Greek-speaking people through his pastoring and the ministry he founded, the Hellenic Christian Program. Through the years, Yerasmus was called to plant or nurture Greek Free Evangelical Churches in Boston, Chicago, Montreal, Toronto, and in Melbourne and Sydney Australia. He also encouraged and supported many Greek immigrants as well as students who came from Greece and Australia to prepare for ministry in the church. He and Evangelia arranged to bring several Greek children suffering from heart disease to Chicago for surgery. In addition, he supported evangelical ministries in Greece, and established a Christian bookstore in downtown Athens as a witness for the Lord. As a scholar, Yerasmus authored many books, including a biography of his Uncle Kostas, and published and edited respected periodicals for several years. He also produced Gospel radio programs for Greek-speaking communities around the world. At his death, he was completing a translation of the New Testament into modern Greek. Yerasmus will be remembered by his family and friends as a generous man whom the Lord used to touch the lives of many people. He was fervent in his faith and committed to preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Visitation will be on Thursday, February 4, from 4:00-8:30 p.m. at the Cumberland Chapels Funeral Home, 8300 W. Lawrence Ave., Norridge, IL. A prayer time will be held from 7:30-8:00 p.m. The burial will be private. A public memorial service will be held on Friday, February 5, at 4:00 p.m. at the Anderson Chapel on the North Park University campus, 3225 W. Foster Ave. at Spaulding Ave. in Chicago. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to bring to the visitation or memorial service a card with your thoughts and memories.

Dear Zervopoulos Family,

My husband and I attended Dr. Zervopoulos' Bible study in Chicago when my daughter lived there for several yrs. It was wonderful to hear him speak on God's Word. His knowledge of the Word was tremendous, and we are thankful to have heard him speak. We love and esteem people such as yourselves. I know he is rejoicing with the Lord now. (I lost Nick in Feb. 2009). God Bless You, Katherine Xanthopoulos, PA

To Dr.Litsa Zervopoulos and family,
My deepest sympathy for the passing of your husband. In the late 50's during my stay in the hospital for an illness, you were there to give support. You also gave my mother the blessed opportunity to meet Dr. Zervopoulos who became our spiritual advisor and friend for life.
May God be with you all,

Dr. Paul Thomopulos & family

Martha and Dr. "Z",
My condolences on the passing of your dad and husband. I brought my children to you, Dr. "Z" many years ago while we lived in Chicago....following the tradition of all my sisters and brothers! I know it is difficult to lose a loved one, but knowing that he is home with the Lord is glorious! How comforting is the passing of a loved one when we know he is with the Lord! May God bless you all.

Dear Family,
I didn't know your father and husband well..we were patients of your Mom's pediatric practice. Through her, and of course through Martha, also, I feel like I knew your family. I talked to him several times when trying to reach your Mom, and I will never forget how kind and understanding he was with me. I just wanted all of you to know that our entire family sends our prayers and deepest sympathy. God bless all of you...from The Esser Family..Don, Debby, Melissa, Scott, Donnie, and Jaime

He certainly touched many lives.
Dr Zervopoulos actually baptised myself and our family (along with many others here in Melbourne's Greek Evangelical Free Church) in the early 1970's.
I still remember sitting by the Radio - listening to his broadcast each Sunday. He had a pleasant manner and his friendly charisma touched many of us that he came in contact with.
Well done my good and faithful servant.

Let's keep his family in our prayers.
