Evangelia Zervopoulos Obituary

Zervopoulos, Dr. Evangelia 92, of Naperville, IL went home to be with the Lord on February 18, 2014. Evangelia was preceded in death by her husband, Yerasmus. She is survived by her children, John, Martha (Demetrios) Zervopoulos Siomos, Irene, and Peter (Anita). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Vassilis (Austine) Siomos and Effie (David) Siomos McDougal and great-grandchildren, Demetrios Siomos, Persephone McDougal and Ares McDougal. Evangelia is also survived by her sister, Lela, and by nieces and nephews in Greece and America. Evangelia was preceded in death by her youngest sister, Georgia. Evangelia was born and raised in Greece. Through her childhood and adolescence in Pireaus, she developed a love of music and became an accomplished pianist. During her university years, she attended medical school in Greece and, following graduation, served a residency in Geneva, Switzerland. Evangelia's future life of service began to take shape in the late 1940s when she met her future husband, Yerasmus, in the Greek Free Evangelical Church in Athens. By the decade's end, they were engaged to be married. In 1950, Evangelia followed Yerasmus to the United States. They married in Boston. Within the next few years, Yerasmus earned a Ph.D. in theology from Boston University. Evangelia accepted an appointment as a medical resident in pediatrics and cardiology at Boston City Hospital; by the end of her residency term, she was appointed chief-resident. By 1955, John, Martha, and Irene had been born. In 1956, Yerasmus and Evangelia and the family moved to the Chicago-area. Peter was born in 1960. Evangelia's life had several facets, all of which she lived out fully. She exhibited a genuine care for others and always saw the best in people. She was a loving wife and a partner with Yerasmus in the Lord's work. Yerasmus and Evangelia arranged to bring several Greek children suffering from heart disease to Chicago for surgery. She was a dedicated physician for 35 years in her private practice and as a staff member of Swedish Covenant Hospital and Children's Memorial Hospital. She made the best pastitsio dish, a wonderful complement to Aunt Vi's banana bread. She was an inspiring role model, as a mother, as a professional, as a mentor to medical residents, and as a woman who testified to God's grace by the life she lived. Visitation will be Friday, February 21st from 4:00 p.m. 8:00 p,m, at Cumberland Chapels, 8300 W. Lawrence Ave., Norridge, IL. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 22 at 10:00 a.m. at the North Park Covenant Church, 5250 N. Christiana Ave. in Chicago. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers or donations, please feel free to bring to the visitation or memorial service a card with your thoughts and memories. For info: www.cumberlandchapels.com or 708-456-8300.

Not sure what to say?

She was a doctor to me and my six siblings in the 1950-1970s. I recall her kindness an ability to make a scary event into a ok experience. I suspect she played a role in myself and 3 sisters becoming doctor and nurses and physical therapist. Glad to have her touch our lives. Karen Walsh Miller

I'm a new-ish Mom (kids age 3 & 1) and was just telling my husband about Dr. Zervopoulos, I decided to Google her name. I'm happy to see she lived a long life. My Mom (entered heaven at the young age of 57, in 2008) had great respect for and found comfort having her 3 kids under the care of Dr. Zervopoulos. I'm the youngest of the 3 kids (age 36) and I hope this message finds family members and have a nice reminder that she was a caring Dr. and that her memory lives on.

Dr. Zervioikiys was my first cardiologist in 1963. I really admired and loved her. I was just five years old at the time.

I was a new mother and Dr. Z was my source of calm. She was always available and offering the kindness of advice. Even when we were transferred to another state she sent us a warm note of good by. She was an angel to new Moms.

We are very saddened to hear the news of Dr. Z's passing. Her trust in a mother's instinct came first before her sense of medicine. As a new mother, I felt I had a partner in Dr. Z in this very new undertaking of motherhood. My children join me in offering their condolences to the family, especially, Martha. Louis and Christine Scherb, jonathan, Melissa and Nicholas. She was very special to us.
