WR was a great man and great story teller . He knew so many things. I still miss him.
February 11, 2011
I worked for WR as we all called him watering trees..He called me Gunga Dinn..after Kipling book that was a movie..He had a lot of energy and working for me helped me earn money for college and I even worked one summer between law school..Bill or WR as we called him was a great man ..my late father Paul Mandabach was a good friend..of WR as was my mom Claudia Mandabach..WR loved to work off the stress of business by taking over running the machines that we used to dig lakes when our shift was over..WR seemed just as comfortable behind heavy machinery as he was flying or driving..Here is to you WR.. I feel your presence as I think of the Lakes of South Barrington and hot summers working for you..

To Myrt, the entire Rose and Vandenburg families,
Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to you all after hearing only yesterday of the passing of "Bill", a mentor, an extraordinary "teacher" and personal friend of many years.
I first met Bill in 1969 when I was on my hands and knees laying kitchen floortile in the house we were building. He stopped by to introduce himself and say "hello". Knowing I was busy he politely excused himself and left. I spotted him a few days later on a bulldozer grading a new driveway at the corner of Witt and Covered Bridge. I approached him and asked him if he would be interested in making a few bucks doing my driveway LOL. He smiled and politely declined. What a great gentleman, an icon of the whole Barrington area. He will be missed!

My condolences to the entire Rose and Vandenbergh families. I worked for a time at Rose Packing, and although I did not get to know WR very well personally, he provided a wonderful working climate in South Barrington at the office for the employees.
I'm sure his family and friends will miss him.

On my behalf of my entire family, I would like to extend our sincere condolences to the whole Rose Family.
Though I personally only met Mr. Rose a handful of times over the years, my father, Stan Wanat, knew him as Bill.
Our family built one of the first original homes in South Barrington and that is how Bill and my father met.
There are two personal incidents that I experienced with Mr. Rose that demonstrated him as unique and caring individual.
The first occured during a blizzard in the 70's that literally covered the ground with nearly 7' of snow. The roads were impassable and prohibited my parents from coming home for two days. It was so high, it entirely covered our cars parked in the driveway. I attempted to clear it with a shovel, but failed because I couldn't throw the snow high enough. Dejected and frustrated with the situation, I was about to give up, when I heard a large motor approaching. At first I thought it was a snowplow, but as I turned around, I saw Mr. Rose sitting in the largest front-end loader I had ever seen! With a smile on his face, he waved us aside and prodceeded to remove all 7' of snow from the entire driveway. When I thanked him for helping me, he told me that(now)could spend the rest of the day sledding down the mountian of snow he had created. Then with a smile and a wave, he left to help others.
The second incident happened when I had just gotten my license. Because there were virtually no homes present at that time, I decided to use the empty roads has my own personal race track. Only a block from house, out of nowhere, a South Barrington police car appeared. The officer got out and asked
me if i knew how fast I was drving. Before I could answer, he asked for my license. He examined it a moment and asked if Stan Wanat was my father. I told him yes and then he handled back my license. He told me that he wasn't going to ticket and told me to follow the speed limit posted. I was relieved because my Dad would have been quite angry with me. I got away clean.
Or so I thougt.
About a month later,my Dad went to get his haircut. It just so happened that he met Bill there. (They both happened to go to the same baraber) Bill told my Dad that I had been stopped for speeding, but was not given a ticket.Needless to stay, my Dad grounded me for a month.
What struck me was the fact that Mr.Rose talked to my Dad, as one Father to another, not as a public official to a constituate. He was just a down to earth person who had no aires about himself and treated everyone with care and dignity.
Though these incidents may seem insignificant to some, they are indicative of how he lived his life.
Caring about others. He will truely be missed by all.
Sincerely
The Jeff Wanat Family
My parents are out of town and plan to attend the Memorial Sevice for Mr. Rose in Florida.

Bill was an all-around great guy and we enjoyed getting to know him as residents of The Glen for the past twenty years. He inspired me to get my pilots license and helped keep my compass set on true north on that journey.
He always had a thoughtful comment whenever our paths crossed and will be missed. Our sincere condolences to the Rose Family.

I had the pleasure of working with Bill since I met him in 2004, listing a few of his properties over the years. What I loved about Bill was that no matter who you were, he would always carve out time to hear what was on your mind. I will miss those impromptu get-togethers, as I always walked away with a little piece of wisdom or inspiration.

Bill was quite a fellow. I enjoyed the last year knowing him better, hearing his ideas on building and engineering while driving around in the car looking at construction as well as flying with him in the Goose, his favorite aircraft. His enthusiam for flying and building something from nothing offered many people an opportunity to be creative, learn new skills and earn a good living, all of which help the community move forward in many positive ways so often ignored by others. Quite a platoon leader, history student and funny storyteller. May the Scottish bagpipes always play for Bill.
