William Peatman Obituary

William Richard Peatman, Sr. – 80, passed away in the comfort of his home and in the loving arms of his wife, Rebecca, on Tuesday, April 15, 2008. Born in Burlington on August 26, 1927, he was the son of the late Norman and Vivie (von Valkensburg) Peatman. On January 15, 1949, Bill married the former Rebecca Elliott in Worcester.

Bill attended schools in Fayston and at the age of 18, he joined the US Navy, serving during WWII. For many years, Bill was employed in highway construction working as a grade foreman as well as a supervisor. For over 40 years, he worked winters as a lift attendant, a member of the ski patrol and as a ski instructor for Sugarbush Ski Area and Mad River Glen Ski Area where he was affectionately known as “Choo-Choo”. He retired in 1994. His memberships included the Warren United Church, a fifty year member of Mad River Lodge #77 F&AM, the Canadian Club in Barre, Mad River American Legion Post #75, and the Warren PTA. An avid golfer, Bill held memberships at Blush Hill Country Club in Waterbury, the Northfield Country Club, and the White River Country Club. In his leisure time he enjoyed playing cards and horseshoes.

Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Rebecca Peatman of Warren; their children, Bonnie Banks and her husband, Jim of Summerville SC, Kym Staples and her husband, Dave of Warren, William R. Peatman Jr. and his wife, Rose Marie of Warren, and Bernard Peatman and his friend, Lynn Hier of Rutland; 8 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; as well as step grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family. Bill was predeceased by two daughters, Kathy Lee Peatman and Elizabeth Ann Peatman, as well as 8 siblings.

A Service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held from the Warren United Church on Saturday, April 19th at 2 p.m. with interment to follow in the Warren Village Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. A reception will follow the burial at the Warren Town Hall. The family requests that flowers be omitted; rather memorial gifts would be appreciated to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre VT 05641, or to the Vermont Campaign To End Childhood Hunger, 180 Flynn Ave., Burlington VT 05401, an organization near and dear to Bill’s heart. I'm sitting at your kitchen table for coffee or maybe dinner, but more often for card games. Bill & Charlie are most often partners (thank heavens!) & Becky & I play together. The guys just LOVE to kibbitz (not that Becky & I don't) & there is no one who is loving life more than Bill when the rubber has been played & "the guys" have beaten "the girls". I see him at the table on all of those occasions looking just as he does in this guest book & that makes me very happy. I also choose to think that Bill & Charlie have once again taken their places at the table and are waiting, somewhat impatiently, for "the girls" to arrive.
I love you all & ask that you not judge my absences from your lives as anything more than my own personal problems. My sincere condolences,

So sorry to hear of your loss. I have many fond memories of Uncle Billy and so do my children. He always seemed to have a lot of lose change in his pockets to give them so they could go get candy. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of "Uncle Billy" visiting with us kids at my grandparent's (George and Leona Peatman) house in Middlesex. He always had a smile and a seemingly unlimited amount of spare change for candy. Every kid's dream right? He was a very good man and he will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. I have always enjoyed the times I had when visiting with you folks; they were especially pleasurable and it always seemed to make my day when I spend some time with you and Bill.
My family, especially my granddaughters, always liked Bill for many years up at Mad River Glen. May the thoughts of the good times of the past help you get though this very difficult time of sorrow.
