Wayne Newlun Obituary

Newlun, Wayne Thomas (a.k.a "Banker" Wayne), 71, resident of the North Shore since 1972, passed away December 3, 2010 in his home in Highland Park. Wayne was born in Seattle, WA to Alice and William Newlun on September 6, 1939. A graduate of Garfield High School in Seattle and a student at DePaul University in Chicago, he entered the world of finances in his early 20s. He began his career in the banking industry at Home Federal where he worked in the mail room for one week, and was quickly promoted to a teller position. He ended his career at the age of 56, retiring early as the Vice President and Manager of Loan Services at Bell Federal Savings and Loan in Chicago. He lived an extremely full life as a retired Banker, distinguished chef, passionate gardener, avid fisherman, world traveler and enthusiastic golfer. His uncanny humor was undeniably unique and he was one of the most stubborn, yet kind-hearted and lovable men that ever existed. Above all, he was an extremely devoted husband, brother, uncle, grandfather and first-class daddy. He is survived by Doris Newlun, wife of almost 20 years; children Richard Thomas Newlun and Andrea Elizabeth Newlun; grandchildren Taylor Darcie, Joey Thomas and Charlotte "Charlie" Jenna; siblings Dick and Jim Newlun and Patti Davisson; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Don Proctor and Jerry Newlun and sister Joan Newlun. Words cannot express how deep this loss is, and all who knew him would say the same. A memorial celebration of his life will be held Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 7:00p.m. at Highland Park Country Club, 1201 Park Ave. West, Highland Park, IL 60035. Interment private. Tonight, I was thinking of you, Doris, and of all the memories I have of our childhood and youth, including the memories of your wedding to Wayne, Dickie's birth and Andrea's baptism, which I think was the last time we saw each other. So, I just decided to look you and your family up on the Internet and found that Wayne passed away.

I looked at his picture and could still see the Wayne that I knew years ago when you were newly-weds and your first "child" was Oscar. . I'm very happy that you and Wayne had children and grandchildren together but I am very sorry that he passed away too soon..

I wish that we could have stayed close over the years but life does pull everyone in unexpected directions However, no matter the passage of time, I will always remember the special moments we shared -- wearing matching Halloween clown costumes that your mother and my Auntie made for us, playing dolls in your bedroom and having tea parties in your backyard playhouse, playing Parcheesi and Labyrinth and, of course, having you in my wedding party, shopping
togethe for your wedding gown.and being your Maid-of-Honor.There are so many more.

I extend my sympathy to you and your children and grandchildren on Wayne's untimely passing. Over the years I have remembered you in my prayers and I will continue to do so.

Forever your friend,

Lynne

I met Wayne at Bell probably over 45 years ago. I remember one Christmas I was living in a one room apartment on the north side and Wayne said he had a surprise for me, but I would have to wait downstairs in the lobby of the apartment before I could see. I think it was at lest 4 to 5 hours before he said I could come up. I couldn't believe my eyes Wayne had installled wall to wall carpeting mind you it was a one room effiency but none the less I will never forget how georgous that 1 room looked. It was beige carpet a he bought a bright orange shag carpet to put in the middle. He was a special guy and we have kept in touch all these years. Be at peace my friend I will miss you, say hello to Ron for me.

Wayne was already an employee at Bell when I started in 1967 and we both 'retired' early in 1994. Perhaps this experience can best be summarized by saying 'his reputation preceded him.'Those of us who knew him from Bell can figure that one out!
Although Wayne and I never worked together directly, Bell was a family and throughout the years all our lives intermingled both on and off the job. And like any family, there was often 'the good, the bad and occasionally, the ugly.' Yet, there was never 'the boring' when it came to Wayne. He was intelligent and sometimes outrageous. He knew his business, yet loved 'monkey-business', too. To borrow a quote from my husband, and part time pilot, 'he pushed the envelope'. Maybe that's not all that bad!
I'm saddened to hear about his passing -- much too soon with too much life yet to live.
Sincere condolences to Wayne's family and extended family, including our Bell family, too.

I worked at Bell Federal Savings for eleven years, and yes, Wayne was quite a colorful character at times, but he definitely knew his stuff when it came to the mortgage business. He definitely told it like it was, and he throughly enjoyed life. Condolences to the family as well as to his many close friends.

My deepest sympathies to Wayne's family and friends. An old co-worker from the Bell Federal days.

Ask Dick and Patti about the traveling times with Wayne on the Seattle Ferry headed toward Quilcene, Washington for a few days of camping in the mountains at an old boy scout campsite - I'll never forget the night Wayne tumbled over backward, beer in hand, down a very steep hill, toward a pond. It was very dark, and all we could hear was crash, crash, crash - and then "it's ok! I saved my beer!" He was quite a guy and I loved him dearly. My love and sympathy to all of his familly and friends in this time of sorrow - Sincerely, Jean Getchonis (Jeanie Newlun, wife of Dick Newlun 1976-1988)
