I knew Wally from about 1975 to 1979, when I was living a few years in Lincoln Park recovering from a divorce at age 26 by playing tennis at Waveland on the lake. I played so much I ended up winning the All-City tournament a couple of years, and then represented Chicago in the National Public Parks Championships. I will never forget Wally, who always inspired me, as he also reminded me of my father, who was blond, stocky and 5'5, and who taught me tennis at age 7. I affectionately called him, "Dad." Wally did so much to "grow" tennis in the parks in Chicago, and what a mark he left in perpetuity, as the Hall of Fame recognized him!

My heartfelt condolences to Wally's family. During a significant period of time in my life, Wally was like a father to me. I just found out about his passing and I am sorely grieved. I know that the Lord with open arms has accepted him with the words -- Great Job Wally!!

I will always remember Wally as a kind and funny man who wore outrageous swimsuits. He and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers during this tough time and I send my sincere condolences.

Wally was the most influential person in CPD's tennis program. He will be missed by many instructors he supervised and players that admired his dedication.
