Dear Eva and Family,
It will forever be a happy memory that I was able to navigate to the South Side and enjoy a visit with Walter and Eva. I hope that when you run into Mozart and Mickey Mantle that you let them know that if they took better care of themselves they would have lasted a lot longer. And I guess the same goes for Rhadames.."you'd last a lot longer if you didn't sing"

I had the fortune of being in Mr. Kelly's World History class at South Shore High School in 1961. He told our class the funniest joke I've ever heard, and I repeat it to this day.

Dear Walter,
I know you have been greeted in heaven by Elizabeth Scwartzkoff and her friends singing the trio from Rosenkavelier, which you of course are conducting with a silver baton or maybe a silver rose.
Please look down on us with a smile.

Dear Eva and Entire Kelly Clan,
My deepest sympathy to you and yours for the loss of your husband, Dad and grandfather. He was truly one-of-a-kind---a great teacher, and a great friend.
He was my high school history teacher more than 40 years ago (and my "boss" in the infamous Book Room). He wrote a mock "recommendation letter" for me that I treasured for years encouraging potential employers to "excuse" my many dangerous and illegal activities as "youthful passion" and they should give me a chance and hire me anyway!
I was so touched when he and Eva came to my Ph.D. party after not seeing me for many years. He was a very special, gifted, funny, and sweet man and I hope heaven is ready for him to begin lecturing the angels!
As they say in Yiddish, he was a true "mensch"---a really decent human being!
God bless you,
Kiya

Mr. Kelly was the most interesting, knowledgeable, and entertaining teacher I ever had. His insights into Chicago politics and history were amazing. I looked forward to every lecture complete with Irish brogues and colorful anecdotes. He was the quintessential teacher and gentleman. May his family be comforted by the legacy of his wisdom, humor, and good will.

I had the privilege of having Mr. Kelly as my history teacher at South Shore High School in 1961. He was one of the best teachers I ever had, and one of the greatest people I ever knew.
As a teacher myself, I know that I will be so good a teacher or so good a person as Mr. Kelly.

I was only privileged to meeet Walter briefly. I knew him through his daughter, Kate, who always spoke of him with love and pride. In even casual conversation, Kate often mentioned the lessons she learned growing up and it was clear to me that these were guidelines she valued and could count on to provide solidity in her life. I know that Walter's death will be a huge loss for all who knew him, but also that his wisdom will live on in his students, children and grandchildren. I hope the family can find solace in this time of grief.

This man was my grandpa. He meant so much to me. He always told me stories from his past and never forgot his students. In the past year, he was fragile and sickly. He is so much better now.

I want to take this opportunity to share with each of you sorrow for your grief on the death of your husband/ father.Mr.Kelly was one of those professors that I will never forget because he gave me the opportunity to finish my masters degree. Whenever I heard of your husband's/father's name, it was always connected with scholar and fortitude. His perception and sensitivity of problems excelled most others at Chicago State. My husband and I attended and graduated from CSU in the late 60's.Your dad was Ron's student teaching supervisor and coordinated the advanced placement activities between Morgan Park High School and CSU. His stories surpased all others. They were long and detailed. The Wagner family would like to express our thanks and love to a man that excelled most others. Charlene and Ron Wagner
