Marten, Virginia Armstrong
Virginia Armstrong Marten, age 96, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2022. She was born in Evanston, IL to the late William and Loretta Armstrong. Virginia was educated by the Madames of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, IL and was a member of the Pi Phi Sorority at Northwestern University.
Virginia was a generous philanthropist and enjoyed her time in service to several organizations. Virginia served on the board of directors of Brebeuf Preparatory School and was honored to receive the school's President's Medal. She was a member of the advisory council of the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame and was named Member of the Year of the Indianapolis Notre Dame Club for her service. She also served on the board of directors of the Indianapolis Symphony and the St. Vincent Hospital Foundation. Marian University recognized Virginia with an Honorary Doctorate in Public Service. A lifelong devout Catholic, Virginia was a Dame of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre and a Dame of the Order of Malta.
Virginia was preceded in death by her first true love John S. Marten and was blessed with a second loving marriage to Eugene S. Witchger. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Sloan Marten and her grandson, John Rynard, Jr. Virginia was the mother of 12 children, 38 grandchildren and 46 great grandchildren. Her love and kindness was felt by them all. She is survived by her 11 children David, John Jr. (Judy), Thomas (Connie), William, Christopher (Jan), James (Debra), Sue Anne (John) Rynard, Amy (James) McMahon, Timothy (Danielle), Alicia (Michael) O'Connor, Virginia (Timothy) Hupfer. Virginia was especially blessed to be in the compassionate care of Anne Snyder for the last 10 years.
As a wife and mother, Virginia's gifts for patience, kindness and generosity showed. She created a warm, peaceful home devoted to faith and family. Virginia loved to travel, play bridge and work in her garden. She was a parishioner at St. Luke Catholic Church and a member of Meridian Hills Country Club.
A Visitation from 10:30 to 11:30 will precede a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated on March 18th at 11:30 am in Saint Luke Catholic Church, 7575 Holliday Drive East, Indianapolis, Indiana 46260.
