Tom Coyle Obituary

Coyle, Tom Of Tampa, Fla., passed away at his home Oct. 9, 2012. Tom was born in Dublin, Ireland, on March 12, 1950. He emigrated to Chicago on Dec. 27, 1958, with his mother and six siblings, joining their father, John, who had immigrated a year earlier. Including Tom, the Coyle family eventually grew to thirteen children, Margaret, Patsy (Johnston), Eleanor (Kruis), John, David, Joe, Stephen, Anne, Kevin, Brendan, Eamonn and Kelly. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy Anne Doyle; father, John; and brother, Brendan. Tom excelled in athletics at St. Helena of the Cross, Brother Rice High School and University of Michigan. A Chicago Tribune High School All-American, Tom was co-captain of the 1972 University of Michigan Rose Bowl team. Tom was inducted into both the Brother Rice High School Circle of Champions, Chicago Catholic League Coaches Association Hall of Fame and All American Football Foundation Hall of Fame. He also was a proud member of the University of Michigan Letterwinners M Club. Tom loved attending and playing football at Brother Rice High School and the University of Michigan. He loved his coaches Tom Mitchell and Bo Schembechler, the assistant coaches and all of his teammates. Many of Tom's teammates became lifelong friends with whom he stayed in touch and loved immeasurably. Tom is remembered as a modest and humble person who was a great brother, uncle and friend. Out of respect for both Tom's personality and his stated wishes, the Coyle family honored his request to have only a private family gathering at his home in Tampa, Fla. As I sit and watch ND/Michigan for the last time, I think often of my hours and hours with Tom not only on my back porch but also at the Tampa Elks. My memories of his stories about his sisters, his family, toots and of course BO....To his family my most heartfelt feelings to quite a character and quite a friend.

My name is Heidi and I am John's other half and I was in Tampa right after Tommy passed and it was the first time for me to meet all his family. I was so overwhelmed by them, their feelings and all the emotions. They all made me so welcome that I felt like family. The friends and everyone who lived nearby who came over were so giving and so sad about Tom-- it trully showed what such a wonderful person he was. He really helped so many people. I am so sad to have not met him in person -- but I know now what it means to lose a very good, caring man.

Tom became a friend of mine 3 years ago. Many folks remember Tom from his football years. I got to know Tom when he was remodeling our home in Tampa. Tom was an amazing carpenter. He seemed to have a love of family, Irish music and of course football. He was an easy going guy with a generous heart. Always willing to listen intently and give a hand when in need. I will miss the many conversations. Prayers to Tom's family.

I loved Tommy! We got to wrestle one year together at Rice, when he was a senior and I a junior! that was enough! He was a winner! I was a blind kid trying to get accepted; he accepted me, and more! Thanks, Tommy!
