I'm sorry to have missed the wake as having just learned of Tom's passing. A really great guy. We hung out while going through the Academy in '68 and would run into each other from time to time over the years. He was very lucky to survive the cycle accident back then. RIP brother. My condolences to the family.

Tommy's wit was unmatched, his antics could make even the grumpiest cop chuckle. What a character! A day in a tact car with Tommy was an unforgettable experience, thankfully we had many. I'm not going to tell you to RIP, you'll do what you want anyway, I'm certain you're just making sure you get the old crew together. Tommy was always a great guy; a good person, a good cop and a friend to so many--thanks for the memories pal.

Jaja Tom will be sorely missed by his family and friends. We had the pleasure of hosting Tom and his golf buddies over the past few years during their jaunts to Mesquite, NV. We have enjoyed spending time with him here, and communicating from afar. Last year, Tom and his golf buddies sent us these nightgowns that read "Feel safe, sleep with a cop!", and we took this photo of us modeling them at Wolf Creek Golf Club, to show our gratitude. Chicago will never be the same without him. Sending our love and sympathy, The Golf Sales Team at Eureka Casino Resort

Back in 1988 Tom was the president of a neighborhood organization. Tom approached my wife and I regarding entertainment for children at a neighborhood function. My wife, Glenda, and I were American Red Cross Youth Volunteers and we provided a puppet show for the kids about fire safety. Throughout the show a theme song reminded the children to “Stop, Drop, and Roll'. This inane tune had a habit of staying with you.

Two weeks later I was investigating a theft when I was struck by a car driven by the named offender. I was taken to Holy Cross, X-rayed and then removed to the 8th District to be interviewed by Violent Crimes Investigators and a Felony Review States Attorney. They left me sitting in the second floor hallway fighting the pain in my back.

Tom arrived shortly thereafter, reporting for work, and was told about the injured detective and the circumstances surrounding the incident. “Who's the Dick?” “Nielson”, was the response.

Tom ran up the stairs and spotted me sitting in the hallway. Tom looked at me, shook his head and sang “You gotta stop, drop and roll.” The resulting laughter almost necessitated a return to the hospital.

Tom was one of the “Good Guys” and had reserved his place in heaven. I know he will be missed. I hope this tale has brought some comfort to his family.
