Tom was a special young man to every single of us. I was introduced to him by Susan Cole via email. I liked talking to him about anything because he had an open-mind. My deep sympathy goes out to Szpila. Tom will always be remembered by us, victims, friends, St. Rita's.

My deep sympathy goes out to the Szpila family. I kept seeing my mom correspond with Tom almost everday. She always laughed every time Tom emailed something funny. She was telling me how tall he was in her school. I admired Tom for being so supportive of my mom and other victims of St. Rita's.

It was not only a true joy but also an honor to have met Tom and become special friends to the point of love.

It's an understatement that he added such fun, humor and laughter in all of our lives which was, without doubt, priceless.

"Big Tom" or "Jolly Green Giant" as it was what he liked to call himself with me will be sorely missed.

Deepest heartfelt condolences and sympathy to Szpila family in this loss. May strength and courage be with all of us as we forever cherish such fond memories.

Tom and I worked at the same place. Whenever I bumped into him, he made me laugh, without fail. He was extremely kind, and had great, good humor, which he could convey without a word. He was sunshine on a cloudy day. I miss him, but he lives on in my heart. He was a unique and special person who was loved by many. I know that now, he’s making Jesus laugh. See you in heaven, Tom.

Tom was my mentor, teacher, and friend all through my Interpreter Training Program. His generosity and patience were what got me through many of the assignments. Without him, I would never have made it to graduation. Our meetings of the "Breakfast Club" are cherished memories. What a very special man.
