Dear Jim and Judy,
Words can't express our sorrow for your loss.
We've kept you and your family in our prayers, and entered you in our Church's Prayer circle of more than 500 people who have been praying for you daily at Willow Creek, and they will continue for a whole month.

I got some coaching from their pastoral care, and am happy to support you and offer their resources whenever you are ready.

This is going to take some time.

It is at times such as this that I feel the pain of distance more than any others. While I am not yet sure if my physical body will be able to attend the services over the next few days, be sure that my thoughts and prayers will be completely focused on you and your family during this difficult time.

Having lost a niece and a nephew over a span of four years in the recent past, I am acutely aware of your suffering. In fact, as I write this, I am reduced to tears. Courage, my dear friend, and Faith that your boy is in good Hands.

As an electrical engineer like Jim, eventually my grieving process led me to see the incredibly sad days you are now going through as “expanding my dynamic range of emotions”. While it took me years to see this, perhaps it will be some consolation that someday you may also learn to appreciate even the most mundane day – or even those once thought of as difficult – as definitely well above the new average.
