Tempie Henderson Obituary

Henderson, Tempie Ann Tartt 73, died Monday, July 25, 2011, at her home in Skokie, IL. Countless family and friends knew her a loyal and devoted woman with a generous spirit, quick to comfort and support those in need. Tempie Henderson was born April 3, 1938, in Chicago, the only child of the union of Edward and Lucy Virginia Paige Tartt. She was raised on the south side of Chicago and in Maywood, IL, attending Proviso Township High School, there, before attending the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana from 1954 to 1958 where she was a sister of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority. After earning her Bachelor's degree she became a Charter Member of Delta's Evanston-North Shore Alumnae Chapter. In 1960 she married Leon Bernard Henderson, Sr., and moved to Skokie a year later. A dedicated educator, she held a Master's Degree from Northeastern Illinois University in Special Education, and held numerous teaching positions throughout the Chicago area during her career. After an early retirement from teaching, she remained extraordinarily active and productive in her community and her church. Her love of, and passion for, collecting books; reading, and animals, especially Pomeranians and other dogs, endeared Tempie to many as did her vivid stories of experiences as a world-class traveller. A devout and dedicated Christian, Tempie's was a rich congregational life. Committed to The Spiritual Life Church and the Ministry of Pastor Samantha Bynum, she also frequented the Bride of Christ Church, AGLOW Christian Church, and had considerable rapport with other churches and synagogues both domestic and international. Ms. Henderson is survived by her former husband, Leon, Sr.; her son Leon Henderson-MacLennan and his wife Nicole Henderson-MacLennan; her Granddaughters Maribel Luci and Gabriela Belen as well as her Godchildren, and families of, Lynn Smitherman, Leslie Mejia, Mikel Koon, Stephanie Walden, and Nairobi Kim. I have many fond memories of Tempie. She was such a vibrant personality, it is hard to conceive that she has made her transition.
Sincere sympathy to the family.

With great sorrow, to my friend and participant in our arthritis class, I am sending this message to her family. May God bless her soul for ever. I hope she takes a lot of pictures, so in future years, she can show them to me. Yours truly, June Pearlman, Skokie Weber Center.

For as long as I can remember, Ms. Henderson was a dear and devoted friend of my mom. Through all of the ups & downs in our lives, she was there for us, in person or in spirit; praying for us and offering words of wisdom. She so enjoyed our annual New Years dinner and if the weather was too bad for her to drive out, she'd call early and make sure that we put her plate in the freezer! I am going to miss her so much! My condolences to all of her family members and friends.
