Susan Houston Obituary

Houston, Susan Harvey 86, died Thursday, May 31, after suffering from Alzheimer's for more than a decade. She died at her home in Chicago, IL. Her two sons, William and David Houston were with her at the time of her death. She was born in Crawfordsville, IN and attended public school there. After graduation from Swarthmore College she moved to Chicago, where she was an editor of college textbooks for Scott Foresman & Co. Following her marriage to Robert Houston, of Chicago, she was actively involved in civic and political organizations of the city and in the raising of their two sons. An active parent of her boys at Francis Parker School, she served on its board of Trustees. She was also on the boards of Olivet Community Center, the Park West Community Association, the Women's Board of the University of Chicago, and helped spearhead the saving of the stained glass windows of the St. James Cathedral at Quiqley Seminary. She was Marketing Services Manager for Schal Associates (now Bovis), an international construction firm headquartered in Chicago. A long time member of the Society of Friends; Susan hosted the North Side Quaker Meeting at her house for many years. She is survived by her sons, William Houston and his wife Ann McCabe of Chicago; David Houston, Irene Blair and their daughter Nora, of Boulder, CO; her sister, Elizabeth Harvey Kraft of Washington, DC; and her niece, Katherine Porter Kraft, of Chicago.
