Steven Gianakas Obituary

Gianakas, Steven Peter Age 79. Passed away peacefully into eternal life on July 6th, within a year of the loss of his beloved son, George. Devoted husband of Matina (nee Cononelos) Gianakas; beloved father of Peter (Ruta Jurpalyte) Gianakas, Antonia Nancy (Nick) Gianakas Halikias and George Steven Gianakas (departed); loving grandfather of Evana, Steven, Evan, Samantha,Matina, Peter and Christopher; adored brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, friend and colleague to many. Born in Louka, Greece, amidst humble beginnings, before immigrating to the United States at age 16 to pursue the American Dream. He made his home in Chicago. An accomplished entrepreneur and successful businessman, despite starting out as a busboy, he built an impressive legacy that remains strong to this day.In the early 1970's, he purchased Hickory Hills Country Club and built the Condesa del Mar - the first supper club in the south suburbs of Chicago. It featured powerhouse entertainers such as Bob Hope, Wayne Newton, Tom Jones, Frankie Avalon and Engelbert Humperdinck, among other celebrities. His fine establishments hosted political fundraisers for former Presidents Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and other political candidates. A disciplined man who thrived in his work, he also respected the value of family and was a father figure to many, young and old. His wise perspective and vision allowed him to achieve true greatness, not only in business, but also in the hearts of those whose lives he touched. A generous and kind philanthropist who supported many dignified causes, a man of great strength and pride, he lived life on his own terms. He now joins his cherished son in heaven.
