Steve Bumpus Obituary

Bumpus, Steve E. passed away suddenly on Saturday, April 24th. Steve lived his life to the fullest, celebrating all that life had to offer. He graduated in 1982 from the University of Illinois with a bachelor's degree in finance and began his career at the Chicago Board of Trade. In 1986, he joined Greenwich Capital Markets which subsequently merged with the Royal Bank of Scotland. Steve was an Elder and active member of the Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago, serving on several committees. Steve was passionate about teaching 4th/5th grade Sunday School and was a tireless supporter of the church's youth ministry. He was an avid skier and loved the slopes at Alta, UT especially the Glades on powder days trying to keep up with his daughter. He enjoyed catching the "big one" in Key West, FL and made a "mean" blackened grouper sandwich. He was a die-hard Cub's fan and wouldn't answer the phones during an Illini basketball or football game. Steve will be remembered for his infectious laugh and his genuine interest in all people he came across both young and old. He was a compassionate and generous man. Steve left us with many memories and he will be missed by his friends and family. Steve was the beloved husband of Irene (nee Dzido), loving father of Chelsea, loving son of Fred and Sue Bumpus, loving son-in-law of Eugene and Mary Dzido, loving brother and brother-in-law of Sally (Mike) Cavanaugh, Chris, Diane and Grace Dzido, loving uncle of Katie, Kellie and Kristie. Visitation Thursday, April 29, 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Drake and Son Funeral Home, 5303 N. Western Ave., Chicago. Funeral service Friday, 10:00 a.m. at Fourth Presbyterian Church, 126 E. Chestnut, Chicago, IL 60611. Interment at Rosehill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fourth Presbyterian Church in memory of Steve Bumpus and will benefit the church's children and youth ministries. Funeral info: 773-561-6874

Dear Irene and Chelsea,

I was so sorry to hear about Steve's passing. I always admired his (and yours) dedication to the Church, dedication to my children, and his wonderful spirit and soul! Both Bradley and Henry enjoyed Sunday School so much and looked forward to it each week - what a gift that both of you provided to them and I can never thank you enough.

Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. I was so happy that Bradley was able to attend Steve's funeral and very sad I could not attend due to my mother being hospitalized at that time. Bradley said it was a beautiful service and I was so happy he could participate. I hope each day gets better for both of you. Steve will be greatly missed, and please know we are grateful that he touched our lives - what a gift to us!

Irene and Chelsea: I feel very honored to have guided you and Steve and then Chelsea to many great adventures down here in Key West. Over the years we became great friends and I cherished the time we spent together both on and off the water. I will sorely miss spending time with Steve fishing for "the big one" and seeing the pride and love he felt for you and Chelsea as he shared his passion for the water and watched you guys hook up some great fish. Irene, I will miss Steve tremendously and thank you for having the courage to call me and give me the sad news. Please know you and Chelsea are in my prayers and if I can do anything from down here I'm only a phone call away. I truly love you guys.

Dear Irene and Chelsea
Like so many, I have not absorbed the depth of this terrible tragedy. I can only imagine your pain. Steve was the one person who could balance being a boss,a commedian,a warm friend,a loving father and husband! He was always in a good mood because every couple of weeks he acted out his cynicism and wit for 18 holes on me. I will even miss that. It is needless to add that you are in our thoughts and prayers. With much love, Jim Slattery

To the Bumpus Family ...
I am so sorry for the loss of Steve. I had the privelege of knowing Steve from the floor of the CBOT when I started work there in 1987. My first real job was to "watch Bumpus"! As everyone has expressed, he was a man of great integrity, a dedicated family man; and could make you laugh when things looked bleak. He had a great impact on my career at the CBOT. He will be sorely missed.

Words seem so inadequate. You all are in our thoughts and prayers moment by moment. How blessed we have been by your family over and over again. Steve undoubtedly has left an impression on so many of us. His infectous laughter coupled with genuine care for people is a gift given that never can be taken away and we are grateful. Our hearts ache for you, how we wish we could be there right now. Please know that we are praying for peace and comfort for you all.
God Bless, Marcia and Barney

to the Bumpus family,

Very sorry to hear this tragic news. Thoughts and prayers are with you. Among the CBOT and CME people that remember him, they all say Steve was a highly ethical and honest man. That is the highest complement that you can give someone from the trading population.

Very sorry that he is gone. God Bless you both

Dear Irene and Chelsea,

When I will look back at my working years Steve will hold a very special place. I looked forward to our regular conversations over the phone as well as our sharing a good diner here in Montreal where we would discuss a wide range of subjects. Talking about the loved ones was a big part of it. Steve always talked from his heart. All in all close to 20 years of sharing thoughts about markets and personal stories with a very caring, compassionate, honest and intelligent man. To all who had the chance to know him Steve was a living example that both in personal and business life good guys can indeed rise to the top. I always will cherished my memories of Steve.

April 28, 2010

Dear Irene, Chelsea and the entire Bumpus family-

My deepest sympathies to all of you in the loss of your beloved Steve. Steve and I began our careers together in the early 1980's in Market Regulation at the CBOT. As the newcomer to the organization fresh out of college, Steve immediately reached out to me and was genuinely happy to help me learn the business and develop my talents in my role. I largely accredit Steve for helping me and many other colleagues to develop a passion for the financial markets and the futures/options industry. He was instrumental in developing my confidence and for guiding me towards a successful career that has spanned 28 years. Throughout this time period, while our careers took different paths, we stayed in the same industry, worked very collaboratively and most important, we maintained our very strong friendship.

I was deeply shocked and terribly saddened to have learned this news. To lose someone who we all loved and admired, a man of principle, grace, and unwavering devotion to his family, friends and colleagues is simply too difficult to comprehend.

Irene and Chelsea, let it be a strong source of consolation that you were the light and breath of Steve's life and happiness. During every meeting or visit I would have with Steve, he would always make a point of smiling and saying the challenges and struggles of every day work life were more than worth it because he was so happy and blessed with his beloved wife and daughter. Family was truly everything to him.

Steve's deep devotion to his faith and family has earned him a special place in heavan. Rest he is your guardian angel and he will be guiding you through the difficult days ahead and he will be rejoicing as you carry on his legacy and love for people and life.

Dear Irene & Chelsea,

I cannot express how saddened we all were to hear of Steve's passing. I'll never forget his passion watching Chelsea play basketball at Sacred Heart, or his constant smile and reassuring demeanor whenever I was blessed to run into him. He will be missed by so many. Irene and Chelsea
I share with you one of my favorite quotes from Romeo and Juliet:

When he shall die
Take him and cut him out in little stars
And he will make the face of heav'n so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun.

I will think of Steve everytime I see a star in heaven. Sure in the knowledge he is watching you and Chelsea.
Love you so much,

Steve and I did business for many years. Steve would always take the time to tell me all these stories about skiing with his daughter in Utah, how he loved the place. He used to put the amount of snowfall on his daily market recap and we up north would be very impressed. I truly enjoyed talking to him almost everyday and he will be missed a lot.
