Sterling Smith Obituary

Sterling E. Smith, 80, went to be with the Lord Saturday, November 4, 2006. He was the husband of Arlene M. (Steffee) Smith for 60 years. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church, 220 N. Charles St., Red Lion. Family and friends are invited to a viewing at the church at 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Windsor Church of God Cemetery. Olewiler and Heffner Funeral Home, Inc., Red Lion, is in charge. Mr. Smith was born in Red Lion, on September 3, 1926, a son of the late Mervin E. and Elsie M. (Cooper) Smith. He was employed by the former Red Lion Cabinet Company, Pitman Company, and the Teledyne-McKay Company. He was an active community servant. Among his achievements are Scout Commissioner, and Scout Master of Troop 41. He received the Order of Arrow Award, Silver Beaver, Lamb Award, and Wood Badge. He served as a church council member and on many committees at Grace Lutheran Church. His first experience with public community service was with the Junior Chamber of Commerce, where he served as President one term. He helped encourage business to locate in Red Lion. He was a member and former President of the Lion's Club of Red Lion. He was also a member of the Elk's Club. Mr. Smith served as a council member of the Red Lion Borough for 13 years, of which he served as its president. His greatest achievement was serving as the Mayor of Red Lion for 20 years (1985-2005). For his loyal service he was awarded the Catherine Myer Award in 1995, and the Governor's Award for Outstanding Service in Local Government in 2004. In addition to his wife, Arlene, Mr. Smith is survived by a son, Thomas E. Smith of Red Lion; a daughter, Gloria J. Hake of Dallastown; a brother, Richard D. Smith of Red Lion; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Lutheran Food Bank or the Grace Lutheran Building Fund, both at 220 N. Charles St., Red Lion, PA 17356.

As a nephew it has been a real privilege and blessing to have had such a wonderful man as an uncle. He will be missed but I hope all those that have known him will demonstrate their respect for him by keeping his memory alive as well as follow his excellent example of community service
