Shirley Carter Obituary

Shirley F. Carter, 86, of Winchester, VA went to be with The Lord on Saturday January 31, 2015 at Blue Ridge Hospice In-Care Center in Winchester, VA after a long battle with Dementia.

Shirley was born November 25, 1928 in Ada, VA, the son of Warren Jackson and Mary Dixon Carter of Ada, VA

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Carter of Winchester, VA; daughter, Rebecca Carter of Winchester, VA; a son, Phillip Carter and wife, Caireen Carter, of Chesapeake, VA; and three grandchildren, Rachel Carter, Brandon Carter and Shane Carter, all of Chesapeake, VA.

He is also survived by one brother, Franklin Roosevelt Carter of Marshall, VA.

Three brothers predeceased him, Ralph Carter and Walter Carter, both of The Plains, VA and Daniel Carter of Ada, VA.

Shirley served two years active duty in the U.S. Army from February 1951 to February 1953. He was a Private First Class in the Artillery Division where he won numerous awards for marksmanship (which later proved useful in defending his garden against repeated groundhog invasions).

He also operated a barber shop on Piccadilly Street in Winchester from 1960 to 1968.

He loved God and was proud of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed eating out, gardening, working on old cars, taking long drives through the mountains and visiting Virginia Beach.

A funeral service will be conducted at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester, VA on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 2 p.m. with Reverend Hartley Wigfield officiating. Entombment will be private at Shenandoah Memorial Park Mausoleum, Winchester, VA.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601.

The family would like to thank the staff of Blue Ridge Hospice In-Care Facility for their loving care of Shirley during his final days. We would also like to thank the staff of Hilltop House in Winchester, VA, where Shirley was a resident for the past three years.
