Ronald Barnum Obituary

Barnum A.S.I.D., Ronald S. 1938 -- 2003 of Chicago, noted home furnishings design and marketing specialist of international stature, succumbed Thursday evening, October 30th, in Lansing, Michigan while visiting his family. A Memorial celebration of Ron's life will be held in Chicago on Saturday, November 8th, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., at 175 E. Delaware, John Hancock Condominium Residences. Born in Lansing, he graduated from Michigan State University with a B.A., in industrial and interior design. Starting his professional career in Chicago at Marshall Field & Company in 1960, he then became a key member of the corporate staff of Sears Roebuck. In the 1970's, he was the National Design Director for J.C. Penney in NYC and Corporate Design Director for Gabberts Furniture chain in Minneapolis, Dallas and Denver. In 1980, he and fellow designer, Dick Butler, opened The House Store, Ltd., an innovative four-store chain in Chicago and suburbs - one stop shopping that was high-style, flexible, functional and affordable. Ron will be missed by clients, friends and family. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. S. A. (Velma) Barnum; a brother, Bob Barnum; and a sister, Jo MacDonald, all of Lansing, and a number of loving nieces and nephews. Donations may be made in Ron's name to The American Cancer Society.

Ron was an extraordinary person and my life has been better because we were friends. He was generous to a fault, zany, campy and always made you feel happy...he was sensitive, caring and gentle. He lived life to the fullest and his creativity was known in 100's of places. Though the pain of missing Ron is acute, his magical energy is everywhere. I love you Ron, Mollie

My condolences to Ron's family.

Knowing Ron for over 20 years and working with him for more than half of that has been a priviledge. He taught me so much through the years. His influence has been a major factor in helping create the person I am today both personaly and professionally.

His kind heart and great love for life are truly two of the so many wonderful qualities I will always cherish.

Here's to you Ron...you will be missed.
