Robert Wittig Obituary

Wittig, Robert "Bob"

Robert H. "Bob" Wittig, age 75, of Green Bay, passed away on Friday, May 27, 2016.

He was born on February 19, 1941 in Green Bay, to the late Homer & Virginia (Remillard) Wittig.

Bob graduated from Green Bay East High School in 1959 where he was an all-state basketball player and broke the conference relay high jump record. He went on to play basketball and high jump at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning a "W" in both sports. He was a member of the UW basketball team that beat undefeated and top ranked Ohio State in 1962.

After graduating from UW with a degree in physical education in 1963, he began his teaching career at Galesville-Ettrick High School where he was also the varsity boys' basketball coach for three years. He then taught at Sheboygan Falls before starting with Green Bay Area Public Schools in 1969 as an elementary physical education teacher. He later taught and coached at Lombardi Middle School from 1972 until retirement in 1992. Bob spent many summers lifeguarding at Joannes Pool and eventually became pool supervisor for the Green Bay Parks and Recreation, a job he dearly loved.

He spent countless hours researching the family's genealogy—work that had been started by his mother. He created binders that detailed our family's history and would entertain us with fascinating stories and facts about our ancestors.

He loved the Packers and was a second generation season ticket holder and was in attendance at the "Ice Bowl" with his father. Bob was a detailed wood worker, carver and cartoonist. He loved animals, especially dogs throughout his life.

Survivors include his children, Robert Wittig Jr, Ann Wittig, Michael (Tricia) Wittig and former wife, Margot (Herriott) Wittig; grandchildren Turner, Alaina, Benjamin, Braden, Kayla and Riley; brother, Ted (Pam) Wittig; special friend of 20 years, Alice "Mickey" Reed and her daughter, Sheri (Tim) Schneider; nieces, nephews and friends.

He is preceded in death by his siblings, Richard (Carol) Wittig and Judy Talley.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until time of memorial service at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at Lyndahl Funeral Home, 1350 Lombardi Avenue, Green Bay. Interment will be at East Side Cemetery in Denmark, WI. Online condolences may be expressed at www.lyndahl.com.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Bob's name.

A special thank you to Dr. Williams, Kayla from AseraCare Hospice and Amanda, Heather, Krystal and the rest of the wonderful staff at Allouez Parkside Village, thanks to Kevin for all the scrambled eggs!!!

Bob, Ann, and Mike, I am saddened to hear of your father's passing and my condolences go out to you and your families. My memories of your dad are from the GB pools a long time ago. I remember fondly his humor and our life discussions and also enjoying a beer or too now and again. My thoughts are with you.

I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to work with Bob at Allouez Parkside Village. I will never forget those beautiful blue eyes and his witty remarks. Not to mention his patience during the longest shave of his life! He always made me smile. God's blessings on his family at this tough time.

Hope you rest in peace, Bob. I enjoyed our carving classes with Mickey and the wonderful art you would share. The world lost a good man but was a better place for having had you touch so many lives.
