Robert Harner Obituary

Harner, Robert "Bob" Age 88, passed away peacefully March 11, 2016. Bob is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Nancy; son, Tom (Alison); grandson, Mike, and granddaughter, Kirstin.Bob was a resident of Hawthorne Village in Sarasota, FL where he received excellent care and comfort. Bob was born in Chicago, IL.He graduated from Roosevelt High School and enlisted in the Navy during WWII. After the war, Bob graduated from Northwestern University with BS in Electrical Engineering and was an active member of Triangle Fraternity. Bob then earned his Master's Degree at Caltech. Bob was an Electrical Engineer at S & C Electric Company in Chicago for 39 years.Bob made many contributions to the electric power transmission and distribution industry.He secured numerous patents and worked on committees to establish worldwide standards for the industry. As a result, Bob had the opportunity to travel internationally on many occasions. Bob was married in 1955 to Mary, also a Northwestern graduate.They lived in Park Ridge, IL for 40 years and raised both Nancy and Tom there. Upon retirement Bob and Mary spent winters in Sarasota, FL and summers in Lake Geneva, WI. Bob was very active in sports, allowing him to stay healthy until the past few years.He was an avid golfer, tennis player, and swimmer. Bob was truly a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather (Poppa). He will be greatly missed by all. A military committal service will be scheduled for a later date at Sarasota National Cemetery.
