Robert Glore Obituary

Glore, Robert Hixon of Lake Forest/Lake Bluff, IL passed away on December 15, 2008 after a brief illness at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Born on February 17, 1923, Hixon was a life long resident of Lake Forest, IL. He was the son of Charles Foster Glore and Ellen Josephine Hixon. He was married for 54 years to Elizabeth Dilworth Brundred who preceded him in death in 1998. He is survived by his daughter, Maude Elizabeth Glore and her husband, Richard W. Harper of Indianapolis, IN, and his son, Frederick Hixon Glore and his wife, Constance P. Glore of West Boxford, MA. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Hixon Glore, Jr. in 1987. He had five grandsons, Robert Hixon Hux, Benjamin Morgan and his wife Melissa Shaughnessy Hux, William Loomis Hux, Nathan Pemberton Glore and Peter Hixon Glore, each of whom was his "favorite grandson". Hixon was a graduate of the Allen C. Bell School, Lake Forest, IL (1937), The Kent School, Kent, CT (1941) and The University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business, Philadelphia, PA (1948). He served during World War II in the US Army in intelligence in Calcutta, India. He worked for Glore, Forgan and Co., originally founded by his father and Marshall Field, for most of his career in the investment banking industry. He served as an arbiter for the Securities and Exchange Commission for many years. He had been the Managing General Partner of Pioneer Ventures. He served as an Alderman from 1968 to 1974 for the City of Lake Forest, IL. He served on Lake Forest Caucus and volunteered at the Lake Forest Library. He received many acknowledgements of his tireless efforts in behalf of the City of Lake Forest. He served on the Board of Trustees at Ferry Hall School, Lake Forest from 1963 to 1974 and served as President for a number of years. He was elected a Life Trustee of Lake Forest Academy in 1992 serving until the present. He was actively involved in the establishment of the Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest from 1979 to 1996 and was the Chairman of the Gorton Community Center Commission from 1980 to 1993. He was a long standing member of The Church of the Holy Spirit and served on their Vestry from 1967 to 1970. He was a Board of Trustees member of the American School in Switzerland in Lugano, Switzerland in the late 1960's. Hixon served on the Prints and Drawing Committee at the Art Institute of Chicago. He and his wife were governing life members, patrons, and sustaining fellows of the Art Institute. They also were members of the Antiquarian Society and members of the School of the Art Institute Board of Governors. He was Chairman of Podesta and Company and served on the Board of WBEZ. He was also on the La Crosse County (WI) Historical Society board which owns and maintains the Hixon House, the family home located in La Crosse, WI. Later in his life, he became actively involved in the educational needs of many children and recently served as a volunteer math tutor to 5th grade children in North Chicago, IL. However, his true passion was serving on the Rush University Medical Center Board of Trustees where his father and grandfather had served for many years. He served on many committees at Rush including most recently the Investment Committee and Rush University Board of Overseers. He also served on the Board of the Rush North Shore Health Services. Outside of his lengthy tenure on the Board, it is impossible to describe the level of commitment and love that he had for this institution and made the institution the center of his philanthropic causes. He was extremely committed to all aspects of Rush and had particular interest in the School of Nursing. He established the Glore Family Endowed Chair in Neonatology and the Glore Nursing Scholarship Endowed Fund. In June of 2005, he was awarded the Trustee Medal of Rush University Medical Center, which is Rush's most highly esteemed award. Upon his death he had served for an unprecedented 54 years. Throughout his life, he was well known in the community for his eclectic collection of automobiles and two and three wheeled vehicles. He will be remembered for being the first person in the Chicago area to have an electric car in 1965. He received great pleasure from traveling throughout the world visiting many friends and family. He also traveled extensively on the Great Circle Waterway on his boat, the QE TOO, with his family and friends. He was a member of the Winter Club, Onwentsia Club, Union League Club, Car 553, The Attic Club and Camp Wipigaki. The family is comforted with the knowledge that he cared for many and was a big presence in so many lives. When asked by people if he had lived here all his life, he would always answer "not yet". Now he has. Kindly omit flowers. The family requests that donations be made to RUSH University Medical Center for one of the following: The Glore Family Endowed Chair in Neonatology, The Glore Nursing Scholarship Endowed Fund, or the Campaign for RUSH University Medical Center, 1700 West Van Buren, Suite 250, Chicago, IL 60612, Attn: Elizabeth Saylor. Please indicate your preference of donation. Words cannot express our gratitude for the care and loving attention he received at Rush, Lake Forest Hospital and from his caregivers during these past few months. There will be a Memorial Service in Celebration of Hixon's life on January 10th at 11 a.m. at The Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest with a reception to follow. Dear Mr. Glore, Hixon, Although its been many years since we met, I met you there in Lake Forest and Chicago before your beloved son Rob passed on. You may not remember me, having had most of my communication with with your dear Elizabeth since our beloved friend Rob Glore passed on. I have thought of you from time- to-time. Sad to say, I found you too had passed on.

I want to honor you and your wife by saying how much I appreciate the difference you made in the world of urban beautification and community development. My company was back in the 1980's called Beautiful Cities, Inc. Rob was one of my partners here in New York. In our commitment to rally the NY community our parties won over any significant difference we migh have made. My other partner made some strides after Rob passed on. I just couldn't get it together after I last saw dear Rob there at Rush Hospital.

To complete with you and Elizabeth I just want to say how much I cherished the time I spent with you and Rob. We had big hopes and dreams for the visual possibility we wanted to create in our environment. Three is still so much more work to be done. The real work is to try to comprehend what we wanted to do inside of all the unworkability our world seems more interested in placing its focus.

Thank you for your generous heart and spirit of fun that definitely was expressed with Rob whom I loved knowing here in NYC. Life just isn't the same without him and your influence.
With great respect and love, Lydia Mali Gesmundo

Mr Hixon Glore,
from Italy we always remind of you and of the unforgettable time spent together. We've met you in 1996 thanks to our cousin Joe Pasquesi and since that we've always been in touch.
We were waiting for you visiting us in Pievepelago (Modena, Italy) and also in Bologna. We took you to Borgo San Lorenzo to visit your friend Madame Fleming.

Mr. Glore had this charisma and joy for life that cannot be replicated - the twinkle in his eye, his engaging spirit invigorated all of us. My family was blessed to have met him through Robert (his grandson) years back and he has been part of our family since. From helping me decide where to apply for medicine residency (how badly he wanted me to go to Rush) to helping me decide what car I wanted to buy when moving DC, he was a treasured guide. He nicknamed my mom, Bindu Baby, and when he would show up unannounced or call asking for her we knew we were in for a good catchup session. The memories I have of him are endless, but the one that I treasure the most is - soon after meeting our family, he learned that the 3 kids were going to a summer camp in Ganges, Michigan for a week. Of course, with his extensive knowledge of India, a Hindu camp in Ganges, USA intrigued him. Imagine our surprise one day during that week at camp, he strolled up the drive. Classic Mr. Glore, he was driving up to the boat, saw a sign for Ganges off the highway, and decided to pay us an improtu visit. I will miss him dearly - he was everything you wanted in a friend, mentor and family member.

Please accept our sincere condolences. We have the pleasure of working with Robert Hux and have the good fortune of knowing more about Robert Hixon Glore through his grandson. What a wonderful man, with so many achievements and an obvious love for those around him. May his spirit live on through those he touched every day of his life.

My sympathies to the family of Hixon Glore. We spoke only weeks ago -- planned to have lunch in better weather. If it were not for him, I might not have had my career in finance: He had to approve my hiring as a secretary (light typing, no shorthand!) at Glore Forgan, those many years ago!
I am grateful for his wry sense of humor, and his warm attitude --and for the fact that he took a chance on me!

Hixon was a very kind and social person who
had a great sense of humor. My favorite quote, " I am not the man my mother was!"
great insight and great compassion for others.
He will be missed by all. Our thanks for his kindness when we were at LFA.

To the Glore Family,
Please except my heartfelt condolences. I know I don't need to tell you that Hixon was a rare and exceptional person. If you were lucky enough to share a meal, a laugh (that was always included!) or a driving adventure in Tuscany with him (one of the more terrifying yet whimsical moments of my life!) you walked away feeling fortunate, and in some cases: special. I hadn't seen him for a few years, and I was thrilled to meet him for lunch at the Art Institute in September. He had slowed down a bit, but his mind was as agile as ever, and his humor rapier sharp. It was a memorable day--and I'm so happy that I forced him to order dessert: a chocolate pot de créme! Hixon: Life lover, mirth maker and generous sprite, I will miss you. All the best to you all, Scoop
