Robert Brennan Obituary

November 25, 2009

Robert (Doc) Brennan, 72, of Avoca, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at Mercy Hospital, Scranton. He was born in Dunmore May 8, 1937, to the late Joseph and Ann Marie (O'Dell) Brennan. Robert was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Church, Avoca. He attended St. Mary's School and was a 1955 graduate of Avoca High School. Doc served with the U.S. Air Force from 1957 to 1960. After his military obligation, he attended the Morris Technical School, Dover, N.J. Doc then moved back to Avoca and was employed as a woodworker. He retired in 2002 from Dorranceton Millwork, in Kingston. Those who knew Doc Brennan will remember him as an extraordinary human being. He was a kind and loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, friend and neighbor. He freely extended his warmth, kindness and compassion beyond the realm of his family, and was of tremendous service to his community, especially his home parish, St. Mary's of Avoca. Doc was nonjudgmental, open to differences of opinion, and was an eternal optimist. He lived a full and happy life. His genuine love of his life was evident in his wit and sense of humor, the sense of joy he found in the lives of others, his ability to transform wood into objects of beauty, and in his unquenchable interest in a diverse range of topics and ideas. Doc Brennan will be missed immeasurably by those who had the privilege to know and love him. Those he leaves behind are left with the gift of his legacy and the good fortune of being inspired by a man who embraced all that life brought his way. Doc is survived by his wife, the former Ann Jennings. Ann was at his side at the time of his passing, on the date of their 48th wedding anniversary. He is survived by his children, Kathleen and husband Robert Berlew, of Duryea; Mary Beth and husband Michael Carroll, of Clarks Summit; Eileen Brennan, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Ann and husband Brian Corcoran, of Duryea; Robert Brennan, of Avoca; and Marie Brennan, of Avoca. Also surviving are his sister, Patricia Horoszko, of Taylor; grandchildren Shaylyn and Erin Berlew, Brian Corcoran, Liam Brennan Carroll; as well as several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Church, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca, with Fr. Phillip Sladicka and Fr. Joseph Elston officiating. Friends may call Sunday, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Kiesinger Funeral Services, 255 McAlpine St., Duryea. Friends and family are asked to go directly to church Monday morning, as there will be no procession from funeral home to church. Interment will be held at the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca, PA 18641. Online condolences may be made to www.kiesingerfuneralservices.com .

Mrs. Brennan, Kathleen & Robbie, Mike & Mare, Eileen, Annie, Brian, Bobby & Marie...
It's with a heavy heart that we send our condolences for Doc's passing. He was one of the best dads South Street ever had. He meant the world to all of us but more importantly, we know that each and every one of you, his wonderful family, were all the true loves of his life.
His loving nature was as big as his "one-liners" and because of that, we hold optimism for our families, friends, neighbors and mankind.

To the Brennan Family:

My most sincere condolences to the family on the passing of Doc. We graduated from Avoca High School in 1955. The obituary was a wonderful tribute to him; it exactly captured his essence . We of the class of 1955 will miss him greatly.
