Mary Kay and I were deeply saddened to hear of Bob's death while were out of town. Our friendship goes back 45 years, and we could pick up where we left off even if we hadn't seen each other for several years. Immediately we would engage in a friendly debate about our political differences, which fortunately was always laced with humor. I had my first non-family road trip with Bob when we drove to San Antonio and then Laredo in 1968 -- a trip neither of us could ever forget. It's funny that my sadness is now broken up by smiles going back to our great times together. Only Bob could have ever gotten me to enjoy the old Double R Bar in downtown Chicago when I absolutely detested country and western music. Adios, compadre. John Swanson

My sympathies to Bob's family. I've known Bob for 30 years and I am so shocked and so saddened by the news. I called Bob to take him to a Civil War reenactment this morning because he loves history so much! I had no idea and I feel such sadness. My heart goes out to all of you. One never knows when we will have our last words with anyone. We'll miss him so much.
