Age 79, beloved husband of the late Martha Bernas Smigiel (nee Wagner), beloved father of Joseph Bernas, Constance (William) Wujcik and Edward Bernas, devoted grandfather of Peter (Rachel) Weiss, Wendy (Joel) Southern, Richard Ziak, Michael Ziak, Michelle (Jim) Taylor and Mallissa Bernas, great-grandfather of Billy, Sammy, Tommy, Kathy, Emerson, Dakari, Nick, Matt and Michael, dear brother of late Carl (late Mildred) Smigiel, late Irene (late Roy) Mackel, Gerry (late James) Kelly and late Rita (Red) Laratta, fond uncle of many nieces and nephews. Veteran of WWII U.S. Army. Retired employee of the State of Illinois. Former State of Illinois Police Officer. Owner of Marty & Joe's Tavern at 80th & Brandon. Member of South Chicago A.L. Post #493, P.L.A.V. Woodrow Wilson Post #20, South Chicago Social Club, D.A.V. Business Professional Post & Santa Maria K. of C. Counsil #1511. Vsitation Sunday, 1 to 9 p.m. Funeral service Monday at 9:15 a.m. from the Elmwood Chapel, 11200 S. Ewing Ave. Chicago to St. Michael Church. Mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. To the family of Richie, our family extends its deepest regrets. Richie's tavern was a meeting place for all of us who lived in the neighborhood. It was our Cheer's, everybody knew your name. Richie was loved and respected by all in the neighborhood and will be missed dearly.
