Born August 3, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, Richie lived a full and accomplished life making his primary residence in Chicago. Later in 2000, Richie, Past President of the NRHA, was inducted into the Hall of Fame. "Hollywood Jac 86" was described as a "champion" possessing "talent, heart, and grace", descriptors also befitting Richie.

Richard was such a wonderful man. I worked for him for almost 30 years, and never knew a more generous person. He always had kind words to say, always happy, always smiling. You will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to the family and all who knew what a wonderful man he was.

Richard was such a nice man. He always had a million dollar smile on his face. I grew up near his farm in Libertyville, which helped me foster a love and tremendous respect for horses. He will always be remembered by me as a kind and very interesting man. Rest in peace.
