Raymond was born on April 24, 1935, in Oceanside, Long Island, N.Y., the son of Frank and Lorena (Lee) Sweeney.
After graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 1958 with a B.S. degree in Marketing. Ray served our country as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps through 1961. He married Joan Marie Pinter on June 7, 1958, in Lindenhurst, Long Island, N.Y.
Ray and his wife had lived in Traverse City for 29 years. Prior to his retirement six years ago, Ray was a regional manager for a cement company. He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed sailing, as well a good game of Monopoly or Canasta with his children and grandchildren. Ray was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Joan; children, Marianne (David) Brond of Forest Hill, Md., Dianne (Jere) Gulau of New Port Richey, Fla., Raymond F. (Auburn) Sweeney, Jr. of Meridian, Miss., Michael (Cindy) Sweeney of Redondo Beach, Calif., Beth (David) Richmond of Paw Paw, Barbara (Richard) Lacoss of Manchester, Conn.; 15 grandchildren; his brothers, Jack Sweeney of Arizona, Edward Sweeney of New York, Herbert (Joan) Sweeney of New Jersey; and his sister, Lorena Mergenthaler of New Jersey. Also surviving is his sister-in-law, JoanAnn Sweeney of Iowa; along with many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his brother, Dave; brother-in-law, Bill Mergenthaler; and sisters-in-law, Patricia and Charlotte Sweeney.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Acme, with the Rev. Fr. Gerald Micketti serving as celebrant. Entombment will take place in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Mausoleum.
Visitation will take place this evening, Tuesday, April 25, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with a wake service at 7:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Christ the King Catholic Church.
