In the late 50's he worked at the Chez Paree Nightclub for six years, backing up a roster of musical talent such as Sammy Davis, Jr., Tony Bennett and Jimmy Durante, until it closed in 1959. Mr. Sassetti was a member of the house orchestra at the Shubert Theatre for 20 years, lending his talents to such popular musicals and Broadway shows as Hello, Dolly!, The Music Man, and How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. In 1976 he left the Shubert and started the Ray Sassetti Orchestra. Over the years, he enjoyed an acclaimed career as one of Chicago's premier bandleaders, playing at numerous corporate and social events, as well as the Italian Debutante Ball, which featured his orchestra for over 25 years. Ray (and Margaret) have been great neighbors for the past several years. Whenever Ray would be out tinkering in the yard or getting the mail, there was always a smile and a jovial greeting, despite all the pain he may have been going through. For the last 8 years, he so generously supported my annual Breast Cancer 3-Day fundraising efforts with sincerity and authentic enthusiasm. I only wish I had the unique opportunity to hear him play ~ what a talented, true gentleman. The Courts of Windsor won't be the same without you. Keep tooting your horn, Ray!

Ray was not only a wonderful musician, but an extraordinary human being. He loved and respected George and Marie, his parents, and raised two respectful, kind and loving sons.
Everyone who knew him will miss him deeply.
My sincere condolences to Margaret and Mike (Jane), Steve(Donna),Elaine(Lou) and your families. You are always in my heart.

Ray will always be remembered as a very special friend. We shared many great moments since early childhood when we lived across the street from each other on Albany Ave. As the years went by we continued to share happy times. I will miss you, Ray. I will always treasure the memories spent with a great guy.

Ray was a wonderful brother-in-law to me and a caring and loving husband to my sister, Margaret. When I would visit Ray and Margaret we would enjoy good food, fine Italian wine and listen to the Big Band music playing in the background. He will be missed by all who knew him. Dio ti benedica, Ray. Mary Kellems, LaPorte, IN

I am deeply saddened to hear of Rays passing today. I knew Ray in the 80's as he provided musical services for us at the Palmer House Hotel, and always a gentleman and great to deal with. I considered Ray a friend and will surely miss him. My sincere sympathies to Michael and the Sassetti family.

Ray was the best teacher I ever had and I still remember getting off the bus on Belmont avenue to arrive for my lesson. That was in 1955 and 1956, when he was working at the Chez. Vince Reilly

I feel privileged to have known Ray. He was a mentor to me and I am grateful for having been able to work with him and learn from him. He was always great to talk to on the phone.. We would commiserate about what medical science was doing for us as we got older. I will truly miss a real gentleman.
