I am blessed to have met him a few times when I worked at Mobil on the run gas station off the 90 expressway. He would pass through on his way home from work . He was so nice to talk to even wrote a little letter to my mom . She has since passed but I have the letter he wrote it was beautiful I will cherish it. I was heartbroken when I heard the news of his passing. God bless your family and friends always. In some way he has touched my life and I am sure he has touched many others he surely isn´t forgotten.

Dear mother of Randy,

My prayers are with your family.I was a volunteer and I wish that I could have done more on that particular day at the golf outting. My sister whom works there regularly at the golf coarse, asked if I could help. We were at my dad's 79th birthday party the night before and I wasn't sure if I could be of that much service at the benefit. I was hit by a car between 54 and 58 miles per hour and live with multiple injuries. As they say never judge (at all) a book by its cover is so true. I was helping my daughter put gas in her car when the accident happened. I had 5 head fractures, brokent femur bone and humerus bone with 60 inches of metal in my body. Doctor said my bones will degenerate and I will have soft muscle tissue damage through my whole body.My sister said I could make a difference this day for Randy and his family and set aside the way I'm feeling. It's not easy to set pain aside when you feel your neck crack every time you turn it, knees hurt....etc.
When I awoke the next morning and my sister said it's 6:30, hurry up we have to leave in 20 minutes, I thought I don't know if I can do this in the heat all day. When we arrived, my sister introduced me to a couple people and off she went out on the golf cart to keep the golfers hydrated during the hot golfing benefit outting. All volunteers wore carribbean shirts. I approached the person who was in charge of volunteers. I wasn't given much to do and repeatedly said please use me where I can be of some type of assistance. On two occassions men were looking for volunteers and I spoke up only to have found that two ladies who just arrived were given the assignment.
At this point, I felt I am here to make a difference by focusing on Randy's benefit and to be used wherever I can make a difference. My thoughts were not of my own pains and whether I can stand on my feet for a long duration of time but to be of service so the program can run smoother. I know this can not be complete unless everyone who is there can be of service. For not knowing other than 2 people when I arrived, I went home with the feeling of gratification that even small people of all diversifications (short, tall, color, different abilities) can make a difference. It's not the names of special people but the people themselves that have a big heart and will go out of their way to help others to the best of their abilities. I left to go home in the evening and can say that I was very proud to have been of service in the clubhouse and on the 13th golf course hole. Sometimes all it took was a smile or wave that made someones day. I enjoyed asking people how they knew of Randy? Some of the replies were that I worked with him, he's my friend, I didn't know him but I knew of him or I came from out of state just for this event. However the media looks at this event as being small or big should not be measured at just the outcomes but to also look at the in-comes (the people that make it happen). People are not looking for gratification for they receive it within themselves by giving to one another.
Dear Randy's mother,
I just want to say that the best gift my grandmother gave me was the gift of caring. I'm glad my sister pushed me and said, you can make a difference by giving back and not think about my own aches and pains on this special day. Thank you for your expression of gratitude you said to the volunteers and the wonderful foundation in your son's name. Life is about giving and as people we can give and give and keep on giving. It's wonderful when we can care for others and don't expect nothing in return. My grandma taught me it's much better to give then it is to receive. In my eyes and heart I've always believed in that. God Bless you and your family and God Bess Randy in Jesus name.

Sincerely,

The Volunteer of the 13th hole at the golf outting.

To the Salerno family,
It's still so hard to believe, that Randy is gone. I turn the news on in the morning and can still see the sadness in Rosanne's eyes. I lost my husband 2 years ago and still feel that emptiness. I am so sure Irene feels that too. Irene if you read this, know that it is hard and even after 2 years, the sadness is still there, but good friends and family, help a little to ease that pain...debbie

A little over two months have passed by and I still have a hard time believing that Randy passed away. I believe I signed this guest book in January and still time after time watch clips of his memories on YouTube (see, there are good reasons to go on YouTube). With the recent economic changes in the broadcasting business, I don't think any TV market will ever have the kind of newscast/newsshow that Randy delivered. He delivered to the viewers to a way that no one has ever tried to duplicate. And yes, I enjoyed the two times I saw him in person while I lived in Houston during the 2005 World Series. God Bless!!!!

Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To Irene:
I don't know how you did the eulogy I just watched on WBBM-CBS, but I want you to know that your strength was SO apparent. No one could ever wish or expect what you now face, but with the support of your families I know that you are going to continue to carry on, and raise a BEAUTIFUL family.

Thank you Irene and family, for sharing this great man with millions. That was so thoughtful of you to let CBS 2 broadcast his funeral. Randy was a truly friendly, engaging gentleman. I am so glad I met him that early morning a couple of years ago. He spoke with me, introduced me to Ahern and made sure they put me on camera during the breakfast cruise. What a sparkle in his eyes and magical smile! I was lucky to have been the recipient of his good natured teasing, I'll never forget him. May the appreciation and outpouring of love from all who were touched by him give you some solace. He and you were a class act!

It appears as if Randy's life touched so many people in such a positive way...may that give you comfort and peace at this time. He always seemed as if he really enjoyed what he was doing on the air. Irene and Family - My husband and I watched the channel 2 news every morning. We absolutely loved Randy and Rosanne - their chemistry just worked! When I heard the news on Friday morning, I wept on and off through the day. Though I've never met Randy, I felt like I knew him like a brother. Randy had this charisma that just drew you in. His lively approach in reporting made you "stay tuned"! In further reading about his personal and family life, it was obvious that he was an all around really great guy! In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Irene and kids, My heart broke for you the morning Randy passed.I am so truly sorry for your loss. I never had the opportunity to speak to Randy, but I will always remember the tall man walking across the parking lot to pick up his girls from school, with little Charlie in his arms. I hurt for the children,Randy was such a great father,it is just not fair. I know that God has his plans and that Randy will be with you guys in spirit always, but you still cant help but to ask why Randy? Our hearts go out to you and your family, and you will continue you to be in our prayers.Randy will truly be missed by many. Our deepest and sincerest sympathys.

Dear Irene and family,

I am so sad and sorry for your tremendous loss. I am still in disbelief over this. Life seems so unfair at times and this is one of those times.

The funeral service today was beautiful. I watched it on the webcast. I only began watching Randy when he came to Channel 2 but with everything that has been said and shared about him over the past few days, I feel as though I have known him forever. You and your children are blessed, as well as the rest of your families and friends to have had such a wonderful human being in your lives'. Randy was blessed too, for all of you. The strength and beauty and sincerity of your love shines through. I pray that the Lord does indeed turn our mourning, but especially yours into dancing. Hold on to your love. Hold on to your wonderful memories.

God Bless,
Kathy

My heart breaks for Randy's family. They and Randy will never leave my thoughts and prayers. I worked with Randy at a restaurant in Bloomington, Illinois back in 1985-86. We were the same age, but I admired him so much. I looked up to him as a role model even then. He was such a good guy! When I first saw him on WGN I knew that this was the deserved reward for a man like him. I always wanted to send him a note; I never thought it would be this one. I'm stunned and sad at his passing, and I'm sad for all who will not get the chance to meet him. God bless you all.

Randy-
Rest in peace.
Well will all see you again.

Irene,

Ever since I heard the tragic news I have been thinking and praying for you and your kids. From all the clips I see on tv about Randy I admire how he put you and the kids first in his life.

The most important thing we learned from this tragedy is that behind the tv scenes his family values are priority in his life. You are blessed with wonderful memories.

Keep strong and live life to the fullest with your kids. God bless you and my prayers are with you.

I do not know Randy or the family personally, but feel close because I watched Randy on Channel 2 news all the time he was there. He was a joy to listen to in the morning. This is such a terrible accident that took his life. My heart goes out to his wife Irene and his children. I feel there pain, because I too lost my husband a year and a half ago. My sympathy goes out to the family and hope in time they will heal with the beautiful memories of Randy. My sympathy goes out to Randy's co-workers, especially Roseanne who worked side-by-side with Randy. She also is very good to listen to. They were both very funny and I neeeed that at times. May God be with all of you and Bless you to ease your pain.
