Portia Bailey-Beal Obituary

Mrs. Bailey was my high school music teacher and choir director at DuSable High School from 1957-1961. She was an amazing musician and choral director and instilled in me a love of choral music, and was influencial in my pursuing a Masters in Choral Music Education. Under her leadership the DuSable Choir received "superior" ratings in each of the city-wide choral competitions that we competed in for the 4 years that I was in the choir. I remember fonding the singing experiences that we had singing at the Board of Education building during the Christmas holidays, and singing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Orchestra Hall. I will remember her smile, her musicianship, and the care she demonstrated for each of her students. She was a phenomenal woman and educator.

Mrs. Bailey was my. Music Teacher at Joseph Medill Elementary School on the Westside of Chicago. She put on Operettas, at 10 yrs old I was blessed to sing a solo The Little White Cloud That Cried. Mrs Bailey would let us listen to classical Music, taught us how to read music, and would take groups of her music classes to Orchestra Hall to hear the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I was also privileged to sing in the All City Chorus in Chicago in 1953. Looking back from 1951-1955 when I graduated from Medill, I realized That Mrs Bailey was a guiding force and Inspirational in her teaching. As a Senior Citizen a I still remember that Portia T Bailey really. Cared about hheer Students, and wanted us to succeed in life!

I will remember this Great Woman of GOD as long as I have a Memory.......she never taught me music, yet she Taught me so much. I remember her knowing I was hurting, without me saying a word. Oh, how I Loved this Woman.

Mrs. Bailey-Beal was my division teacher at DuSable. As an A.M.E. our paths crossed often. She was always the same, kind and encouraging.

I'm very sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs. Portia Bailey-Beal. I met her when I was 15 years old, in 1978, as a young musician invited to play with the Chicago Conference Choir. To this young church musician, Mrs. Bailey-Beal was always so very encouraging, and always demonstrated a sweet, Christ-like spirit. May God bless her memory, and may He comfort you in your loss.

Remembering her smile and her musical gifts when she shared them at the Dublin Assembly of the then World Federation of Methodist Women in 1976. She also was music director for several World Federation Day Study programs in the Chicago Area. A dedicated and fantastic woman. Thank you, God for the life of Portia.

Portia T. Bailey-Beal was my Division Teacher and Choir Director at Du Sable High School. I always admired her beautiful smile, her spirituality and perseverance. My condolences to her family. She will be missed.

Mrs.Portia Bailey-Beal, What an awesome woman of God, she watched me grow up in the church at Quinn Chapel. My mother, Luella Poole sang with her and was under her leadership for many years with the Chancel Choir and the Conference choir. I also had the wonderful privelage of singing with Mrs. Beal myself. And was honored to sing at her 101st birthday party last year. She was always so sweet and encouraging, Mrs. Beal, I love you and you will always be in my heart. God bless you. Oh what a wonderful choir they have in Heaven now!!

What a blessing to have shared a moment in the life of such a beautiful woman of God. Her spirit and praise was always centered on the Lord and His goodness to her. We enjoyed our time with her and the valuable lessons she taught us as members of Quinn Chapel's choirs. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched and who loved her as one of their own.

What a treat to see Mrs. Bailey playing "Hail to DuSable" on the piano on her 100th Birthday. I was in the DuSable Choir when her composition became the official song for the Class of 1959. To the family, may the memories you cherish help ease the burden of your loss.

Just want to say, what a pleasure it was to know Mrs. Neal. Her smile made my day. Such a sweet person. It must have been such a treat to work with her as part of the Voices of Quinn. I will really miss this very special Icon.

I just wanted to extend my condolences Mrs. Bailey-Beal was my Music Teacher at Dusable High School in the sixties I will always cherish her memories as she stood before our class and enjoyed her respect for music it helped me to appreciate the wonderful things she taught.

Nora, I was so honored when I received a copy of the song she composed, "God is Able". THANK YOU! Your mom was MY Assistant Director of Music at the Quninn Chapel AME Church under my leadership, until she could no longer hold that position due to her health. She was a treasure chest of knowledge, excellence, love and support. She will always be loved and missed and her presence will still always live in my heart. I can honestly say I am better having had met her. Continued Blessings and True Peace to you and your family!

Nora and Family I would like to extend my condolences and to let you know that it was a pleasure working with Ms. Bailey at Arden Courts. She was such a gentle, pleasant, & kind woman whom I will never forget. I remember often praying with her, and you by phone Nora, at night before she went to bed.
