Phyllis Ramirez Obituary

Anchorage resident Phyllis A. Ramirez, 71, died of complications due to a brain tumor at Providence Extended Care on Aug. 2, 2010, surrounded by family and friends.

A service will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. She will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

Phyllis was born June 13, 1939, in Swords Creek, Va. Shortly after, the family moved to West Virginia, where she attended elementary through high school.

While working in Washington, D.C., Phyllis met and fell in love with her husband of more than 47 years, and they began their beautiful journey through life together. Through the military they were stationed in Germany for four years, transferred to assignments in Maryland, Virginia and ended in Alaska, where they spent the last 38 years of their lives together raising a family and enjoying all that Alaska has to offer.

She had a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration with a minor in accounting from Wayland Baptist University. She became a resident of Alaska in October of 1972. From 1975-1995 she worked as an accountant for the Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. She retired after 20 years of service and continued to work in an administrative capacity at Alaska Regional Hospital for Dr. Rai and Dr. Muffoletto from 1998-2008.

Her family wrote, "Phyllis's greatest passion was her family, friends, being very involved with the Catholic Church, including as a Eucharistic minister with St. Anthony's and living life to the fullest. She could make your heart smile with her beautiful blue eyes and infectious hugs. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and all who came to know her."

Phyllis was affiliated with St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Her hobbies included gardening, reading, sewing, ceramics, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Cipriano Ramirez; sons, William Reed and Anthony Ramirez; daughters, Monica Bryan and Veronica Schwankl; daughters-in-law, Kathy Reed and Kristen Ramirez; sons-in-law, Jay Bryan and Jim Schwanke; grandchildren, Timmy, Tommy, Anna Mae, Holli, Carter, Cody and Jason; sisters, Shelby, Mary, Peggy, Betty and Sue; brothers, L.C., Johnny, Billy and Jamie; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Audrey E. Miller and Lemuel Cohen Miller.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel. www.janssenfuneralhomes.com.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Ramierz family. We worked "next door" to Phyllis when she worked in Building B at ARH for Dr. Rai. She always had a smile on her face and a warm greeting. We missed her when they moved. We are very sorry for your loss. She was a lovely lady.

Veronica, your Mom was such a special person. When she hugged you, you knew you'd been hugged. When she spoke with you, you knew you had been listened to and understood. Phyllis had such a beautiful soul and a good heart and she passed along those very traits to her kids. She will be missed by everyone who knew her. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Growing up with Veronica, I spent a lot of time at their house throughout the years. I always felt welcomed and part of the family. Phyllis is one of the most kindest, generous, good hearted person I know. It hurts to lose her but she's with god. I pray for strength for the family in this difficult time. Please know I will miss her and send my love to the family.
