Patrick Sullivan Obituary

Sullivan M.D., Patrick J. Pat passed away peacefully on July 11, 2018 surrounded by his family. Loving son of Joseph S. and Catherine (nee Dever), adoring husband of Nancy (nee Ryan), rock star Dad of Mary-Lisa (Michael Roberts), Robert, Mary Clare, William (Carrie), John (Kristi), and Matthew. Bedazzled Fancy Grandpa of Francesca Lenore Sullivan, Caitlin Elizabeth Sullivan, Hugo Padraig Alaric Sullivan, and Ryan Noble Sullivan, and granddogs Buehrle, Dagney, Berlioz, and Rudder. Loving brother of Mary Kay Joyce (Edward), Connie Oswald, and the late William Joseph. Loving brother-in-law of Mary Ann Sinnott. Fond uncle of the Sinnott, Joyce and Oswald children. Grandson of 1906 World Series-winning catcher (and inventor of the chest protector) Billy Sullivan. Pat was a perpetual student who graduated from St. Ignatius College Prep, the College of the Holy Cross, Northwestern Medical School, Brooks School of Aerospace Medicine and Loyola University School of Law. Pat was a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force and held the rank of Captain. After the Air Force, Pat completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, followed by a residency in Internal Medicine. (Pat would have followed the Internal Medicine residency with a Cardiology residency but he valued his marriage too much.) He was an Assistant Professor and Internist in private practice at Northwestern University School of Medicine and Northwestern Memorial Hospital for forty-three years. Pat loved being a physician and he was a master diagnostician. He adored his patients. Pat retired eighteen month ago and missed his practice and his patients every day. Pat spoke several languages, loved music, playing the piano, flying, and just spending time with Nancy, the kids, the grandkids, and the granddogs. Consistent with his love of learning, Pat donated his body to science. Both a memorial mass and a celebration of Pat's life will be held later, probably in September. In lieu of flowers, the Sullivan Family encourages contributions to support and honor his commitment to medical education through the Patrick J. Sullivan, M.D. Scholarship at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.

He was so right in many diagnosis. I miss him so much...especially when I am at NWMH to see my other doctors. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family whom who spoke of so fondly. I was a patient of Dr. Sullivan's for 30+ years. I just learned of his passing today. It brought tears to my eyes. Dr. Sullivan was an insightful, sympathetic, caring physician who had a manner about him that others could only aspire to. I've thought about him a lot over the years. He proved himself to be more than a doctor. He was a friend, a guide, a tutor, an inspiration and the "Best Doctor Ever". Albeit belated, my condolences to his family. You lost someone really special.

Dr. Sullivan was a very caring, thoughtful and wonderful doctor for my wife and me for over 30 years. He had a lovely sense of humor and was always there when we needed him. His many years of experience made him very practical and enabled us to avoid multiple tests when he was able to diagnose a condition based on his extensive experience. We think of him often and every time we are near Huron and Michigan Avenue we are sad that he is no longer with us. We wish the best for his family in the years ahead.

I just found out about the passing of my dear Dr. Patrick Sullivan. I was a patient of Dr. Sullivan's for 39 years. He was such a wonderful, caring, professional doctor...always took time to listen, to return phone calls, always asked about my children and grandchildren. He had the patience of a saint. This photo was so like him. I cried when I saw it. I was so upset when he announced his retirement but I knew he knew it was time and he wanted to spend it with his dear wife and family. My prayers, condolences, and thoughts are with all of you.

I suppose by now a memorial Mass has been offered for Doctor Sullivan so I will offer my Mass and Holy Communion this weekend for him.

God Bless all of you. Dr. Sullivan was a wonderful man!

I am so very sorry to be reading now of his passing. I was referred to Dr. Sullivan in 1976 and over the years he cared for my mother, father and me. He was a true healer, one of those individuals who exemplified the best by being human, humble and so caring. And then there was his clinical acumen and judgment that were always so right on. When my mother passed away (in Phoenix, where she lived the last four years of her life), I sent Dr. Sullivan a card, thanking him for his care of her and making sure that he knew that she was always so proud that he had been her doctor. He called me the day he received the card, to thank me. No, thank you, dear doctor. Rest well and know that you will never be forgotten by those whose lives you touched and were made better by knowing you.

Just seen this obituary of Dr. Patrick Sullivan. I want to say he was a wonderful doctor. I hadn't been seeing a doctor on a regular basis and, Patrick was my first medical general practitioner. At the age of 47 he examined me and felt uneasy about one of his findings during my examination. He told me that we have to be sure of these things. Pat referred me to an excellent specialist who in turn discovered that I had prostrate cancer.. The cancer was discovered right before affecting the other organs. After surgery I'm still around 17 years later. Pat added such a calmness to his practice that eased the mind of panic and, tension in his patients. I have missed him since his retirement and, truly even the more now, knowing he's not around anymore. May his good memories forever live in the hearts of all who loved him. Curtis Sims

Dr. Sullivan's passing is a tragedy for his family, his friends, and his patients. As a physician, he was without equal, being a brilliant diagnostician and a compassionate person who listened to his patients. A very well known colleague at Northwestern once said to me that he was probably the very top diagnostician in the hospital. My family can confirm that to be the case and also is able to verify that he took the time to talk and listen to us, no matter how busy he was. Medicine was his profession as well as avocation and one hopes that people he mentored will follow suit though he will be a very difficult act to follow. We very much miss Dr. Sullivan and know that no one will ever take his place in our lives.

He was classmate at Holy Cross and freshman year he was next door (a guy from Chicago also). Pat took notes in shorthand and typed them at night after class. After that he would study and do papers (where did he get the time) Pat's notes were so good that at finals he would have 10 so classmates using his notes. Pat, I think recorded the jokes the professor told and that was included in his notes.
I think of him and Holy Cross often and they are all treasured memories.

My deepest condolences to the Sullivan family. I just learned about Dr. Sullivan's passing, and I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Sullivan was my doctor for a long time and it broke my heart when he retired. He was a prince among men. He had a mystical quality about him, revealing itself in his ability to quickly diagnose your medical condition. I will always remember his highly developed sense of humor as well as his genuine concern for his patients. Take heart now that you know he is with God. I am certain God always had Dr. Sullivan's picture in his wallet and is now happy to give Patrick his heavenly reward. May God ease your pain with the knowledge that one day you will see your beloved Patrick again.

Doc Sullivan was my one and only internist after I was out of the care of my pediatrician. That was 40 years ago. After I married, he took my husband on as a patient and I credited Doc for keeping him alive all these years. It was always like visiting an old friend when you had an appointment. His great knowledge and caring ways made him the best. We were heartbroken when he retired and we are heartbroken again at his passing. All our sympathy goes to the Sullivan family.

Dr. Sullivan was my Dr. and the best Internist I ever had. I feel incredibly bad that he did not have the chance to enjoy more of his retirement but I hope he enjoyed as much as he could.

Dr. Sullivan was so dedicated, so true and so caring. I doubt very much that there will ever be another one like him.

Thank you Dr. Sullivan for all that you did for me over the years and you will be sorely missed!!

Most sincerely,

What a loss.
His sensitivity and knowledge went to make him a unique doctor. After my husband had complications from a stroke Dr Sullivan offered
consulation understanding and genuine concern.
His kindness will never be .forgotten. My husband was not his patient but Dr.Sullivan offered us the comfort of hope at a pretty scary time.
To his family... thank you for sharing
my heart goes out to you all.

I knew Pat for just under 30 years. Such a smart man yet so unassuming and practical. So caring. His reasons for retiring were sound, but his sadness about doing so was apparent. He loved the intellectual challenge and his patients. I hope his family finds solace in the many words of kindness they will read in these messages. The magnitude of people whose lives he positively impacted will lift even the saddest hearts. A life well livedin service to others and loved by all who knew him.

I am so sorry to learn of the death of Dr. Sullivan, who was my doctor for over 30 years. He was a wonderful man and a wonderful doctor. No matter what, he would always return calls so quickly and treated each ailment with such kindness and concern. He always had time to chat and catch up. I had worked with his son Rob at Leo Burnett and we would talk about that and about my many home improvement projects. I am very grateful to have been under his great care for so many years. My deepest sympathies to the Sullivan family for this great loss.

Dr. Sullivan was a good and decent man...he was also my friend. As a 20yr+ patient of Dr. Sullivan, he always gave me the real impression that I was his most important patient, in the entire world! This was only one of the rare qualities that made him the best doctor that I've ever had...bar none! Though I'll certainly miss him, I was fortunate to be in his care for so many years. This was a true blessing!

Dr. Sullivan was the back up for Dr. Robert Holstein, my primary physician.

When I suffered a dog bite on vacation and learned Dr. Holstein was on vacation, I groaned, knowing I would have to come in from Michigan and see his back up. Who ever that was.

Dr. Sullivan took my call and called in a prescription for me. The drugs brought down the swelling and I felt fine shortly.

When ever I was in the office, Dr. Sullivan greeted me and was always helpful and kind. I told Dr. Holstein he could not have found a better comrade!

What a loss for the universe! In my opinion, there were few doctors of Dr. Sullivan's amazing caliber.

Pat was a wonderful doctor to my whole family and great friend. His tastes were simple as in his love of grilled cheese sandwiches which had to be buttered on both sides of each piece of bread.
