Orville Scott Obituary

Scott Jr., Orville Ray On the morning of July 21, 2018, a gentle voice said, "Come" and without hesitation, Ray entered his heavenly home. Orville Ray Scott Jr, devoted, faithful husband, loving father and grandfather, respected friend and dedicated servant of God entered this world on April 13, 1938. He was the oldest of four children born to Orville Ray Scott Senior and Marion Pennington Scott. Over the span of his life, Ray planted many seeds of service, exhibiting love and modeling compassion and understanding in his quiet, dignified manner. He was educated in the Chicago public school system and attended Los Angeles City College. He met the love of his life, Jacqueline McFall while both worked at the main Post Office in Chicago. They entered into a 60-year marriage with a relationship that was envied by all. They were blessed with four children, Susan, Synthia, Stephen and Stuart (deceased 2015), ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. With true devotion, Ray gave his all to promote the welfare of his children, extended family and his church. Seeds of deep, abiding Christianity were planted early in Ray's life. He was baptized as a youth at Carter Temple CME in Chicago, Illinois. The early 1970's brought a career move for Ray and his family to Winston-Salem, NC. In Winston-Salem, Ray joined First Baptist Church where he sang in the choir. Twelve years later, upon moving to Raleigh, NC, Ray became a dedicated, involved member of Martin Street Baptist Church. He later became a charter member of Christian Faith Baptist Church where he served as a member of the Senior choir, a trustee, a deacon and Sunday School teacher. Ray also ministered at Central Prison, teaching bible study to death row inmates and periodically conducting Sunday morning services there. He further served his community in the capacity of Assistant Teaching Leader with Bible Study Fellowship men's evening classes at Raleigh New Hope Baptist Church. Professionally, Ray enjoyed a 35-year career with the United States Postal Service. He began as a mail bundler, moved to Supervisor, then Safety Supervisor and ended his career as a decorated US Postal Inspector. After retirement he worked for a private company, Measurements Group, developing a security system. His hobbies all of which he took seriously included photography, long distance running, and men's chorale singing. An animal lover, he was without peer at training the many large dogs that were family members through the years. Ray is preceded in death by his parents, his youngest son, Stuart and his brothers, Claude and John. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Jackie, two daughters, one son, ten grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, his sister Patricia and many heartbroken nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Family will receive friends on Friday evening, July 27th from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh). Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 10 am at the Christian Faith Baptist Church (509 Hilltop Drive in Raleigh), with a formal procession to the Graveside Service at Raleigh Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please donate to and volunteer with Parkinson.org, SECU Hospice House in Johnston County or Habitat for Humanity Wake County. Mike Philbrick

December 13, 2018

To the family of Retired U S Postal Inspector Ray Scott. I am Mike Philbrick. Ray and I were in a group of Inspectors who reported to the Chattanooga Division in 1971/72. As Federal Law enforcement agents we some tense moments during our careers. We also had some gut busting moments of unbelievable comic relief. In 29 years the #1 moment of this type came when Ray and I were on a surveillance together. If you care to learn the specifics please call me at 262-895-1297 or email me at; [email protected]. One word I read in the obituary is a classic description of my experience Ray epitomized the word Dignity.
