Dear Jay,
Our condolences to you.
Nate was one of my favorite uncles.
I used to go with him on his route.
It was a lot of fun for me to work with him in those days. He took me to a restaurant on Roosevelt Rd. for my first time. I'll never forget him.
We enjoyed being with him here in California a just couple of years ago.

Our family has lost its compassionate patriarch. He was a reflection of his father: a gentleman of courage and tenderness; devoted to his family and loyal friend to men of good will. Irving Schaffner,MD

Dear Jay & Judith,
Uncle Nate seemed to be overwhelmed that he was able to reach the age of 94. He would always remind me that he was our only uncle (still surviving). Family was very important to him. He wanted his legacy to be that he was able to bring the family together. He pretty much accomplished his goal and was very proud of that fact. To honor his memory, the best that our family can do, is to stay in touch with each other. I am greatful that I was able to record eight hours of Schaffner history as told by Uncle Nate. It is now a family treasure. We will miss him very much.
Love,
Eugene & Lois

Dear Jay and Judith,
We're so sad that our dear Uncle Nate is no longer with us, but so relieved he is no longer in pain.
Jay, now is the time for you to heal. It is very taxing to take care of a dying parent in such a loving way. Be good to yourself, it is what your father would want.
Sandy and I were talking yesterday about how caring Uncle Nate was. He was always there for our Dad whenever he was sick in the last years of his life. No matter how hard it was for your dad to see his nephew sick, he was always there to support us. He was a joy at the boys' bar mizvahs and came to Ben's concerts at the high school. I think he really lived life to the fullest. We'll miss him.
Love always, David, Robin Joy,
Ben and Aaron
