I had the privelege of coaching Nancy for one year at Thornton Community College (now South Suburban) for one year in the 80's. Many of the women who played for me that year consider that time as one of the best times of their lives. This is in part to the vitality and enthusiasm of Nancy. She was one of the best players I have ever coached. She was hard-nosed and determined, a coach's dream player. I thoroughly enjoyed watching her play a sport that we both loved. I also had an opportunity to visit her at Hinsdale hospital not long after her diagnosis, that too was a precious time of remembering and laughing about old times. I will always remember her tenacity for life and friendships. May God himself comfort all of you as you adjust to life without Nancy.

I had the honor of meeting Nancy only twice. Both meetings so brief-yet each time as I walked away I felt as though I was a better person for making her acquaintance. I did not 'know' Nancy but she was in my daily prayers & I thought of you all often. When I asked about her, the answers always contained words like: incredible, heart-of-gold, strong, tough, courageous...

As I said I did not 'know' Nancy but she truly inspires me. Her strength and selflessness shows me that good people do still exist, no matter their circumstances. She showed everyone, the type of people we should all be. She is still watching and helping us all. Only now she is doing it from above us instead of from beside. I continue to pray for all of you (Reaney family), may God grant you all strength. The most amazing thing of all is that Nancy touched me, someone she did not even know. Just image what she did for the people who actually knew her.

The sense of suffering will never be a clear answer to the question: Why me? But to the question: What did I make of it? Consequently from time to time we ought to review our history and turn it into a song of thanksgiving. Once we have gone beyond the very understandable stage of painful questioning and even of revolt we will be able to rejoice over the distance Nancy has covered.

Nancy and I were teammates with the Spikettes volleyball club back in the 80s. Nancy was full of energy, spunk and enthusiasm. She was a true competitor and the embodiment of a team player. Nancy was incredibly talented and a beautiful human being inside and out. She always brought a smile to our faces with her quick wit and fun-loving spirit. She loved the sport of volleyball, but she loved the journey even more. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of having her in their lives--our fond memories of her will live on.
