Makinen, Michele

Michele Makinen, 76, of Hyde Park, died from complications of ovarian cancer February 14, 2022, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. In 1966 she completed a BS in Medical Technology at the University of Pennsylvania and in 1971 an MSW from the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. Michele's career as a social worker started in the Radcliffe Infirmary of Oxford University, UK, 1972 – 1974, and continued in Chicago, where she worked in family service agencies, including Metropolitan Family Services. She also performed crisis intervention for the Police Department of Orland, IL. After a 2-year Marital and Family Therapy program at the Institute of Family Therapy, she trained fellows and interns at the Chicago Center for Family Health. An ardent art quilter, Michele helped organize the Lakeside Quilting Guild of Hyde Park. Several of her quilts were accepted into national and international exhibits. She is survived by sons, Eric William and Stephen Matthew, a grandson Jacob William, and her husband of 56 years, Marvin W. Makinen. At the time of death, she was surrounded by her husband, son Stephen, and daughter-in-law, Sehra Eusufzai. Visitation will take place February 25, 2022 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm and Saturday, February, 26, 2022 from 8:30 – 10:00 am in the Augustana Lutheran Church, 5500 S Woodlawn Ave, of Hyde Park.
