Michael Lenke Obituary

Lenke, Dr. Michael Lowe
October 31, 1938 - March 1, 2013
Dr. Michael Lowe Lenke died in peace on March 1, 2013. He was surrounded by his loving wife and devoted family in his final days. He passed away after a short, courageous struggle with cancer. He will be cherished and dearly missed by all who survive him - his wife of 36 years, Dr. Eleanor Novick; his children, Rabbi Michele Lenke and Jody Skoutas and stepchildren, Jeffrey Novick, Karen Kahn and Ari Novick; his grandchildren, Emily, Zack, Zoey, Sophia, Sammy, Noah, Josh and Jessie; and his sisters, Kat Kroll and Moon Kerson. Michael will be remembered for his spontaneity, fun and endless energy as a husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was born on October 31, 1938, in Brooklyn, NY. He moved to Fairhaven, VT as a teenager where he played varsity basketball and won the 1955 State Championship. He returned to Fairhaven regularly for reunions and retained a large circle of friends. Michael moved to Los Angeles in 1956 to attend UCLA. He was recruited as a young graduate by General Motors where he quickly rose through the design and engineering ranks. He left engineering at age 35 to become a psychologist, earning Masters Degrees from USC and Immaculate Heart College and a Ph.D. from Fielding University. He practiced as a marriage and family therapist in Los Angeles for the last 35 years where he was loved and respected by his patients as a kind and insightful therapist. He retained his connection to UCLA by becoming a major contributor and has held season tickets since the 1960s to UCLA Bruins men's basketball. Most importantly, Michael made a difference in the world with his wisdom, honesty and character. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Stanford Hospital Cancer Center where he was treated with care and respect by Dr. James S. Kahn, his son-in-law, and Dr. Pamela L. Kunz (C/O Dr. Kunz, Division of Oncology, Phyllis Bussey, 269 Campus Drive, CCSR 1115, Stanford, CA 94305 and note the gift is in memory of Dr. Michael Lenke).
His funeral will be held on March 3, 2013 in the Bay Area at the Home of Peace, Congregation Beth Sholom Cemetery located at 1299 El Camino Real, Colma, CA. Shiva will be observed at the home of Karen and James Kahn immediately following the funeral.

Michael was my first couples therapist with my now-ex-husband. Despite the fact that we divorced, Dr. Lenke was a FABULOUS therapist. His ability to listen to process through the overload of content and be "real," never once coming across as smarter, more knowledgable, or better in any way. He was compassionate, loving, caring, and helped me immensely as a human being. I am currently an MFT Trainee myself and remember Dr. Lenke so very fondly. I learned of his passing when I was 9 months pregnant with my twins, who are now almost 5 years old. So often, I find myself wishing I could send Michael a picture of my beautiful babies as he knew how badly I wanted children back when we saw him (approximately 2010-2011). God bless you Michael Lenke...you are missed.

Today, four years and two weeks after his passing, I found out my old friend Mike Lenke had passed away. While I hadn't spoken with him in over 15 years, he has always remained very dear to me.

Mike and I became friends at a time in my life (age 15) when he helped me to gain greater confidence in myself, and to believe I could accomplish the things I chose to do. He was like the big brother I never had.

He shared his time, family, wisdom, and humor with me. I remember countless summer days body surfing with him at Will Rogers State or Zuma Beach. Then, there was all those UCLA basketball games; during the heydays, no less.

When I encountered difficult times, I knew I could call on him for council. Even before he became a therapist, he always had the best advice around. He seemed to have perspectives on situations that no one else could see. He was truly remarkable in that way and I believe that helped elevate him to being the practitioner he was.

To Ellie, Michele, Jody and the rest of the family, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Mike you will remain in my heart as long as it's ticking. Thank you for all the memories. I hope we meet again sometime, buddy. RIP.

Dear Ellie and Family,

I can not express to you how heavy and sad my heart is today upon hearing about the passing of Michael.

He was such an important part of my life who got me through some really difficult times. I am proud to have called him my friend for the last 14 years. His words still ring in my ears to this day. I'm sure he would be pleased in knowing that I am "being good to me". I will never forget him.

Mike was a fun and wonderful person to know. A great fan of UCLA basketball and fun to sit behind and watch him as he watched the game. He will be missed but stay forever in our hearts.

Ellie-
My heart goes out to you and your family. We were all truly blessed to have had such an amazing and prolific man in all of our lives. He was a true warrior of principals, always the beam of sunlight and strenght. I will forever be grateful for all that I learned from him, and will hopefully be able to pay at least some of it forward some day.. My thoughts are with you and let's always remember his raucus laughter that always evolved out of a fit of giggles.. "Be good to you.." Love Jen Phillips
