Goldman, Melvin 90, passed away on Saturday, February 23, 2008. He graduated from West Aurora High School in 1934 and the University of Illinois in 1938. He was the son of Rose & I.L. Goldman of Aurora. Mel was the owner of Globe Lumber Company as well as other business ventures. He was active his entire life in the Aurora community: a member of the Aurora Country Club, Temple B'nai Israel, and the YMCA as well as the boards of charitable and business organizations. All of his life, Mel was an avid athlete, competing and excelling in many sports. He was the city champion in 1935 in three sports - tennis, hand ball, and table tennis. In later years, Mel's avocation was duplicate bridge. During WWII he worked as a research physicist on Navy projects at Armour Research. He is survived by his wife, Irene Stone Goldman, his son Stephen (Natalie) Goldman, and his daughters Susan (Craig) Carson and Peggy Goldman: 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Mel was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Marshall Goldman: his sisters, Lorraine Puklin and Ruth Schulman. A private service was held. Donations can be given to the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley 111 W. Downer Pl., Suite 312, Aurora, Illinois 60506 in the Mel and Irene Goldman Scholarship Fund or the general fund of the foundation. We were all saddened to hear of Mel's passing. He was a fine bridge player and a true gentleman. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Irene and the Goldman family.
