Mattie Robertson Obituary

Robertson, Mattie

Mattie (Griffin) Robertson, widely acclaimed for her musical talent, began her music journey at an early age playing piano, organ, and violin at the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago.

Her musical contributions to her church families spanned over 60 years, including her role as Sanctuary Choir Director at First Baptist Congregational Church. Robertson, director of the Whitney Young Magnet High School Renaissance Girls Chorus, impacted thousands of young women during her decades-long tenure in Chicago Public Schools. She wrote Whitney Young's school song and garnered many musical honors, including her arrangement of "I Must Tell Jesus," featured in the 2001 hit movie "Hardball."

Robertson recently celebrated her 90th birthday. She departed this life December 27, 2024 and leaves to mourn countless family and friends.

I am heartbroken because I didn't know. I loved being in your Choirs from 1977 until I graduated in the Summer of 1980. We survived everything that happened in 1979 but you still made us attend rehearsals for all of our recitals and competitions. Your talents were only matched by your love for teaching, music, performance, and us!!? Whitney Young is on the map still because of you. Your style will always be yours alone. I will always love you and I appreciate everything that you taught me, especially for becoming my friend all these years later. Mrs. Robertson, Rest in Paradise.

There is a saying, "Your Life maybe the only Bible someone else reads!" As a member of the Whitney M. Young High School Renaissance Girls' Chorus, Mattie truly lived HER Bible and Dash with purpose, perseverance, strength, creativity and authenticity. She was my 2nd Mother while I was at Whitney Young; as she proudly demonstrated her unconditional love for her..'Girls'! Thank you, Mattie; for empowering and uplifting countless Women through Music; as I KNOW you are directing Heaven's Wonderful Choir!!! May her Legacy be a blessing to her Family, Friends, and her...'Girls!'

MaMattie was truly one of a kind. I had the privilege of serving as her professional personal driver and security, whether for long-distance trips or special local occasions, whenever she needed me to serve her. Whenever her name popped up on my caller ID, I knew I had to answer. She didn´t call just to chat about the weather-she called with purpose, always encouraging you to use your spiritual gifts given by God through the person of the Holy Spirit because you knew Jesus Christ or your physical abilities to serve the Lord.

It was an honor to serve her professional transportation needs and to stand and be directed by her as a Bass chorister in the Sanctuary Choir at FBCC. I´ll deeply miss our road trips, especially the one we had planned to New York this year. But God had other plans. Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us that His ways are higher than ours, and we can't argue with that.

See ya when I see ya MaMattie!

Mrs. Robertson will definitely be missed. Her classiness, warm heart, stern hand and loving personality all embodied in one, made her the special person that she was. Just as so many will share, Mrs. Rob and I had our special moments and in her true spirit, she never let me down and guided me as only she could. Mrs. Rob will always have a special place in my heart. I will love you forever Mrs. Rob

Ms. Mattie had a heart of gold! She loved to talk to people. I can honestly say that I doubt she'd ever met a stranger. She was that friendly. Her generosity was never ending. She was a great encourager. I will truly miss seeing her at FBCC.
REST WELL MS. MATTIE we all know now that...
IT IS WELL WITH YOUR SOUL!

I was blessed to be one of the many members of the Renaissance choir, and a student of Ms. Robertson's only division during her tenure at Whitney Young. What a special teacher and woman of God she was! Praise God for her wisdom, support, and kindness she relentlessly shared with us. We will forever miss and appreciate her.
