Moore, Dorothy
Dorothy Mae Moore
February 7, 1938 – March 4, 2026
It is with the heaviest of hearts that the family of Dorothy Mae Moore, née McGee, announces the passing of our beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend. On March 4, 2026, Dorothy slipped quietly from this world at the family home - the same home she and her beloved husband had shared since 1964. It is only fitting that a woman who made family the very center of her life chose to leave it surrounded by those she loved, and who so fiercely loved her in return.
Dorothy Mae was born on February 7, 1938, in
New Orleans, Louisiana, to Harry Edward McGee and Marie McGee, née Vernon - hard-working, God-loving folk rooted in the red clay of Louisiana. She was the second of seven children, and from the beginning, she was formed by that particular kind of strength that comes from close quarters, close kin, and encompassing faith.
The story of Dorothy and Nathaniel Moore began, simply enough, with an apple. Unlike the apple of old, it did not open either of them to the knowledge of good and evil - growing up Black in the Jim Crow South had already seen to that. What it opened instead was something better: a life shared. That life, built together since 1958, stretched across 67 years of marriage and produced five children who were the living proof of everything Dorothy believed in.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 67 years, Nathaniel Moore, originally of Wilson, North Carolina; her five children, Nathaniel Moore, Jr. and his wife Melba, Thomas Lee Moore, Pamela Denise Moore, Barbara Ann Moore, and Sharon Lynn Moore and her partner Ashley; her two grandsons, Michael and William; and five siblings - Harry Edward McGee, Jr., Arthur Vernell McGee, Joyce Marie McGee, Vernie Albert McGee and his wife Lillian, and Earl Bernard McGee and his wife Norma - along with a wide and loving circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whose lives she touched in ways both quiet and lasting.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Edward (dec. 1989) Marie McGee (dec. 2006) and her beloved younger brother, Johnny McGee, who left this world suddenly and far too soon (dec. 1967).
The world feels a little less sure without Dorothy Mae Moore in it. But if she taught us anything, it is that love, tended carefully and given freely, does not disappear - it simply finds a new place to dwell. Heaven, it seems, has gained even greater footing.
