MARVIN E.GAVIN----OBIT. TRIBUTE 9/1/09

Dearest Katherine and Yvonne,
I just got the news of Judge Gavin's passing. Please accept my deepest sympathy. I can only imagine how very painful AND FRUSTRATING it must have been for him and your family coping during his prolonged illness. My heart goes out to you! Find solace and strength in those fond memories of him. He, like your other siblings, left a great legacy! My
parents held your family in high esteem...You were our Kennedys!!!
We are thankful for all the contributions you made in the community. I have always treasured the memory of being invited to your home to meet a cousin, Doris G. who lived in East St. Louis. We were in high school at that time. It is ironic that we should meet again after so many years in Pasadena, CA - worked on the same staff for years. One day we were talking and she asked where I'd come from and when I said Chicago Heights, she asked if I knew the Gavins!!! She smiled when I answered; BUT, waited until the next day to tell me who she was! With warmth and affection!

I have received word of the passing of a favored friend and admired jurist over the past many years. We shared many instances of his wisdom and compassion. That was the trademark of this distinguiished jurist, Judge Marvin Gavin, that set him apart as something very special. He had that special gift of being compassionate. The Illinois legal society has lost his guiding light.

A long line of Cole children have been touched by the Gavin family as our teachers, principals and mentors. Marvin Gavin was the only black lawyer that I knew. When I was a student at Northwestern, he encouraged me to continue on to law school. And I did. He inspired me to be a lawyer. I am blessed to count him as one among many of the Gavin family who supported me and mentored me. RIP Marvin.

To the Gavin family - Just hearing today of the passing of Judge Gavin.

May God Bless and Comfort You in this time of Bereavement. To many young men and women Judge Gavin was considered a "justice hero", a fair and compassionate figure on the bench. For another generation, he was one of us who "made it" and generousely gave back. He never forgot his roots. Kept his feet on the ground and his finger on the pulse of the community. Everyobdy in the East Side ("Hood") was proud of him and actually thought of him as their Lawyer. Way before they were saying " I'll call Johnny (Cochran)", we were saying "call Marvin." He was highly regarded for his intellect and his speaking style - he had a way with words and with people of all ages, races and persuations. To me, Marvin was a personal hero, role model and mentor. He looked past the rough edges, and saw potential in a young girl with lots of mouth and the passion to match. He along with others devoted valuable time and energy helping to cultivate and encourage me. Because Marvin was one of my mentors and role models, today I am also one of the kids from the hood who made it. Thank you for sharing Marvin with us.

Much Love
