Martin Berklan Obituary

Berklan (Brkljacic), Martin F. 73, died unexpectedly September 12, 2001, at his home in Waukegan. Born Martin Brkljacic on March 11, 1928, on the South side of Chicago, Mr. Berklan was a long-time school teacher and prncipal in the Waukegan Public Schools System before retiring in 1984. He also taught junior high school in Markham from 1955-1957. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Helen; a daughter, Lynn (David) Surico of Mt. Prospect; a son, Jim (Sandy) of Libertyville; a brother, Michael (Patricia) of Meridian, Idaho; and grandchildren, Nicole and Zachary Surico and Matthew and Nicholas Berklan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mande and Mate Brkljacic and a brother, George, all formerly of South Chicago. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., Friday and 8:45 to 9:45 a.m., Saturday, at Peterson & Patch Funeral Home, 408 N. Sheridan Rd., Waukegan. A Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m., Saturday, at St. Anastasia Roman Catholic Church, 624 Douglas, Waukegan, with interment at North Garden of Memories, 14th Wt. & Green Bay Rd., North Chicago, following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Waukegan Fire Department Rescue Squad unit or your favorite charity.
