Martha Matias Obituary

Corder Matias, Martha Jane of 12104 S. Wallace St., Chicago, Illinois, crossed over to the next level on January 30, 2011. She passed peacefully and courageously in her sleep at Roseland Community Hospital after a brief illness. Ms. Matias is survived by her son, John H. Shamley (Zieba), of Washington, DC and her daughter, Shauna Donielle Beard (Chris), of Orlando, Florida, both of whom were at her side. She is further survived by her grandchildren - Benefsheh "Bam Bam" Verell, Nas Kal-El Beard, and Jada Simone Beard, and by her great-grandchildren, Kamron Jiyan Verell and Violette Sahar Verell. A celebration of her life will take place on Saturday, February 5, at 2 p.m. at the Wallace Street address. Ms. Matias was born December 23, 1929 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She worked in a variety of occupations during her lifetime, most notably for a number of years, as Shift Supervisor at St. Ann's Hospital on Chicago's north side. She endeared the hearts of many families within her community. Martha spent over 30 years caring for the children in the neighborhood. It was during this time she instilled her own special, natural loving brand of energy and enthusiasm for life. Her feistiness and compassion will be missed by everyone. Martha was the only child of John and Georgia Shamley.
