I always admired Mark for his intelligence and caring spirit. He was blessed with the ability write well for the newspaper. He enjoyed cooking and treated many over the years to his delicious meals. I wish I had lived closer to him and Mary so that I could have been able to sit at the table with them. He served the church throughout his life. Mark used well the gifts that God gave him. Thanks for the good memories. Phil Schoenherr

Mark and I went to grade school and high school together. He was very intelligent, but at the same time very personable. He loved doing drama and reading. I remember that he, his mother, and teachers from Concordia would gather and discuss grammar problems and solutions. Mark cared for our classmates and reached out to help them in their times of need.

When I moved to Chicago and joined First St.
Paul’s, he was one of those people who welcomed me and everyone I knew. Jesus is welcoming him home.

With heartfelt sympathy to Mark´s family, friends, and many associates on this sad loss. Mark was a prolific reader, skilled book reviewer, and avid chef. I met Mark while working at the Chicago Public Library, but we only became better aquainted through a fun email correspondence after leaving that institution. His accounts of his latest literary finds, health challenges, culinary creations, and visits with a large and varied cohort of friends were so interesting and fun to read...the man wrote with such style. I will miss his correspondence, but will remember him every time I pull out one of the many recipes he shared over the years. RIP, Mark.
