Sister Maria Straeten Holy Spirit Missionary Sister Adelgunde, Maria Straeten, died June 17 at age 104 at the Convent of the Holy Spirit in Techny, Ill. A German native, Sister Adelgunde was the fourth of seven children. She joined the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters in 1929 and celebrated her first profession of vows in 1931. She came to the US in 1932, accompanied by four other Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters. She celebrated her final profession of vows in 1937. Sister Adelgunde cared for residents in St. Ann's Home in Techny from 1932-41. She cared for residents at Sacred Heart Home, Hyattsville, Md., from 1941-44. She returned to Techny in 1944, to care for residents at St. Ann's Home and work in the sewing room. From 1966-71, Sister Adelgunde worked in the sewing room at Divine Word Seminary, also in Techny. A Mass of the Resurrection was held on Thursday, June 19, at the Convent of the Holy Spirit in Techny (Northfield). Interment St. Mary Cemetery Techny, IL.
