Sorry this is so long it was just a few memories I felt like sharing. It came from the heart.
In April of 2002 I had the opportunity to meet one of the most caring, intelligent, sincere gentleman. This man was the father of the man I love.
Dr. Frank spent a week in Portland visiting Matt, and I was lucky enough to be invited to tag along. On the week long journey I watched the relationship that Matt and his father shared. Matt and Dr. Frank were playful, thoughtful, deep and intelligent together, they were supportive of each other and at times they appeared more as good friends then a father and son. In my mind that is one of the greatest things that a parent can become to their child. It was absolutely beautiful to watch. Dr. Frank was amazing to me. He embraced the relationship that Matt and I shared with an open heart and more memorable with open arms and hugs. Dr. Frank shared Passover with my family, my entire family. Everyone enjoyed his company and he touched each person he spoke with that evening. Later in the week we went off for an overnight adventure to the Oregon Coast. From the Cheese Factory to a hole in the wall restaurant that was great, we had a great day. One of the more memorable moments of the day came when we stopped for a hike at Matts favorite beach. Dr Frank made it well heard that he no longer exercised or hiked. You wouldn't have known it that day! He was such a trooper and thoroughly enjoyed our hike. I actually think he handled the rocky trail and cold better then I. The pictures would probably prove it. We spent the night in Seaside before returning home.
If I was to describe the best part of the visit, it would probably have to be the fact that on his last night in Portland he choose to spend over an hour using his talents and expertise to teach me visualization. For me Dr. Frank taught me a lifelong lesson that week. I use it often and am grateful to have had the opportunity to use his knowledge.
Dr Frank touched my whole family that week. We still talk about his visit.
It wasn't until the week of Thanksgiving that we were able to see him again. Although a brief visit I was still able to steal a few minutes of conversation. We briefly discussed my job and my family. He was so thoughtful and the fact that he remembered the names of my entire family impressed me even more. Upon leaving he said a few words I will always remember. He hugged me and said he loved me. It was a special feeling because it was a mutual respect and love. He then hugged Matt and told him he was proud of him and that he loved him. It was a special moment. Matt and I smiled about it in the elevator on the way out.
Today the world and more importantly Matt, lost an amazing friend, a cheerleader, a resource, and a dad. Although the world will be different without him and I am sad I had only just begun to know him, I am confident that his memories, smiles, and legacy will live on in his children.
Joan, Mitch, Jason, and Matt- my thoughts and prayers are with you. Thank you for letting me get to know your dad. He was a special man. If there is anything I can do, please don't hesitate to ask.
