LYDIA SEARS Obituary

Newburgh, NY

Lydia Sears of Newburgh passed away on Monday, September 13, 2010 at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, Newburgh. She was 91.

She was born on May 6, 1919 in Bethlehem, PA, the daughter of Jack and Constance Almeida. Lydia married Joseph J. Sears 66 years ago on September 6, 1944 in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Newburgh.

Lydia was a longtime parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church and Club 60 in Newburgh. She gave freely of her time to sponsor and assist many immigrants from Portugal to the United States so that they could obtain their citizenship.

Lydia was the most loving wife, mother and grandmother who cherished and adored her family. She loved music, dancing with her husband and spending time with her family. She was kind to everyone and loved animals, especially the family dogs. Lydia was a special person and will be greatly missed by her family and friends who love her very much.

She is survived by her loving husband, Joseph J. Sears, Sr., at home; son, Joseph J. Sears, Jr. and his wife, Barbara of Oxford, CT; daughter, Elaine D'Aprile and her husband, Ronald of Newburgh; grandchildren, Rebecca Sears and Arielle and Allison D'Aprile; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Emily Nunes of Erie, PA.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 16, at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 17, at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Newburgh. Entombment will follow in Cedar Hill Mausoleum, Newburgh.

Flowers will be accepted or contributions in Lydia's memory may be made to the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, 1 Sunrise Lane, Newburgh, NY 12550.
