Lucy Cephas Obituary

Cephas, Lucy M. an angel, March 8, 1920 - October 16, 2009, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, great-aunt, wife, mentor. Loved and adored by many, Mrs. Lucy M. Cephas was born the 8th of 17 children to Eli and Minnie Bowden and emerged as an athlete (track, swimming, volleyball, softball) and a scholar. She attended Emerson Elementary, Lucy Flower Technical High School and graduated from Wright Junior College on June 21st, 1940, one of only two African-Americans in her class. At the time of her passing, she was still employed by the Illinois Department of Public Aid where she served an astonishing 52 years, first as a caseworker and later as a supervisor. Known for her relentless zest for life, commitment to excellence and fierce dedication to family and friends, she has touched the lives of many in her exemplary lifetime. She is remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, great-aunt, wife, co-worker, and mentor. A true Angel has gone home. We love you. Wake and Visitation Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wallace Broadview Funeral Home, 2020 W. Roosevelt Rd. Broadview, IL. Funeral and burial 10:00 a.m.to 12:00 p.m., St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 48 N. Hoyne, Chicago, IL, directly opposite Miles Square Health Center.

You can see the strength, determination, love and care that she displayed shining through her family.
